Actually you can. References to "obsolete" Macs were dropped from that article some time ago.
However, just because you can doesn't mean you should. I strongly recommend against it because of heat accumulation issues. G4 PowerBooks and pre-Unibody MacBook Pros expel heat from the keyboard area. That doesn't happen with the lid closed.
