Back them up to a computer, then back up the computer. If those photos are the only copies you have, you are carrying them on the most insecure device possible. Loss, theft or just dropping the phone would wipe them out of your life.
The best choice is easily iCloud, it is free(first 5GB), secure, and always recoverable.
5GB is possibly enough for all of your photos, but if not , you can buy more memory easily, from the iCloud tab on your iPhone for a cheap price.
Sorry but I can't agree that iCloud is the best place to store 5000 photos. If you mean an iCloud backup, there is no way to verify that the photos are actually there as they are only accessible for a restore. If you mean Photo Stream, again you can't see them on iCloud as they pass through there to other devices and only the last 1000 are involved, and only photos taken after you turn on Photo Stream. I agree with tonefox re importing them to a computer but there are also other online options that are intended for photo storage and access -- which iCloud in its current incarnation relative to photos is not.
Photostream will hold more than 1000 photos. Your iOS device simply displays only the most recent 1000. I.E., if you were at 1000 photos in your photo stream, then took #1001, the #1 picture 'disappears', but if you then delete one of the other pictures, getting back down to 1000 or less, the #1 picture comes back.
You can also use iCloud Control Panel to download your Photostream photos to your computer.
If you're on a Mac, iPhoto is a great tool you can use to do this. After I accumulate a certain amount of photos on my iPhone, I'll connect it to my MacBook Pro to export them to iPhoto. After doing this, I can then remove the photos from my iPhone to gain space back on it.
Thanks TJBUSMC1973, I wasn't aware of the way around the 1000 limit.
It's just my feeling, but I am still not comfortable with iCloud as the safety net for my photos. I want to be able to log from a browser and see them.
I do use Photo Stream to transfer them to my computer and am happy with that. I look forward to the day where iCloud has an option similar to some other online photo storage options available currently. Also, I don't believe there is any way for the original poster to get his 5000 photos that are already on his phone directly from his iPhone into Photo Stream. As far as I know, there are ways to add older photos from a computer but not from an iOS device.

I do it after I've got home and taken my jacket off, returning from wherever I took the photos. And, of course, within the hour Time Machine will have created a backup of them on an external drive. Call me chicken. A phone is not a safe place to store photos!
I completely agree Fox. Photostream should be used as a convenience for sharing, not for anything other than temporary storage. Same goes for the device itself.
At least once a week, I import my photos/videos from my iPhone to my computer, and at least once a month, I make a backup of my computer to an external hard drive. And at least once every few months, I burn 2 DVDs of the past few months worth of photos/videos, one for myself, and one that I put in my fire safe with other important hard copy documents. And there are off-site image storage options out there as well which are available, and I've used occassionally.
The only time I've ever lost photos was about one half-day's worth while I was on vacation when my camera went overboard. And this was on day 5 of my vacation. Each night, I swapped out memory cards and uploaded the current day's card to my laptop. For anyone going on a trip, I recommend at least three memory cards for your camera, or if you're only using an iPhone, backup to either iCloud or iTunes every day.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
