trouble installing lexmark x83 driver

Hi--

I have a Macbook Pro with OS X 10.4.7, and an older Lexmark printer (x83). Lexmark claims that this model is compatible with the model computer and operating system. I've tried installing the software that came with the lexmark many times. I always get to the point where the driver has been installed and I have to click "open print center" to add the driver, and the button won't work. They recommended installing it in safe mode, which I tried. I still couldn't "open print center," but the printer setup managed to find the "scan and copy" program, though not the printer. I tried adding the lexmark scan and copy program, but nothing has worked. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

newmacuser719 and biga549,

There was a similar post regarding this printer.

After rereading that post, it does appear that there may be more of an issue with Intel based Macs such as your MacBook and MacBook Pro. Multi-function peripherals such as the x83 are much more dependent on manufacturer supplied software. These are the devices that are the exceptions to the "rule -- usually works".

I don't have any experience with this device, so I'm searching for a good answer also.

I would suggest that you go to Printer Setup Utility (Applications->Utilities). Highlight the PSU and do a Get Info (command-I). There should be an area where you can tell PSU to open using Rosetta. That will hopefully allow the Lexmark device to be recognized and configured.

I have a feeling that if running Printer Setup Utility using Rosetta doesn't work, you may have to wait for Lexmark to update their software. In any case, I would suggest that you at least let them know the problems that they need to resolve.

Hope there is some help for you in this response.

I don't have either the Lexmark printer or an Intel Mac, but I can give you what steps I would expect to work. Perhaps newmacuser719 will give more detail on the experience.

1. Quit Printer Setup Utility (PSU).
2. Go to PSU (Applications->Utilities) and highlight the application.
3. Do a GetInfo (command-I) for the PSU application. In the Info box there is a place to tell it to open using Rosetta. Make sure that is enabled.
4. Make sure the Lexmark drivers are installed. If you run the Lexmark installer, you will have to quit the installer when it shows the screen to open "Print Center". This didn't even work on my G4 Mac Mini.
5. Make sure your printer is connected and turned on.
6. Open PSU and click on the "Add" icon at the top of the window.
7. A Printer Browser window should open. Click on the Default Browser icon at the top left.
8. Your printer should be listed in the space below.
9. Highlight your printer. This should match the printer with the printer software and default printer name should be automatically filled in. The Print Using area should now be available and show the driver for the Lexmark printer in the pop up menu.
10. Click the Add button to add the printer.

I hope this helps.

Many thanks I got it to work Thursday night (about half hour after my last post) but haven't been able to get back into discussions since then.

Adam (biga549),
I'm not sure if the order is crucial but here's exactly what I did:
1. Go to PSU (Applications->Utilities) and highlight the application.
2. Do a GetInfo (command-I) for the PSU application. In the Info box there is a place to tell it to open using Rosetta. Make sure that is enabled.
3. This didn't solve the problem for me.
4. I reloaded the latest Lexmark driver (dated 2002!) again using the Install X83OSX instaler (the printer on rop of a Mac icon)
5. I got as far as the Install & Agree screen, selected United Kingdom as country.
6. The instaler went through its processes.
7. The Lexmark screen apeared and I hit the "Opwn Print Centre" icon.
8. Application hung so I minimised it and then quit the app.
9. I opened PSU and hit the "Addd Printer" icon - Nothing happened.
10. I hit the "More Printers" button and in the drop down list (the one starting with "Apletalk" etc I found Lexmark X83 listed a the bottom.
11. I selected the Lexmark X83 and it now appears in the Priner list of PSU.
12. I have now made it my default printer and everything is sweet!!

As I say I don't know HOW important the order is but this is how I did it.

Many thanks Matt as this has really been the only major issue I have had with the Mac since switching from a W**dows-based PC. You are a diamond mate!
Cheers
Shakey
P.S. To be honest mate being new to Macs I didn't even know what Rosetta was!!!

I had the same problem with a Lexmark X85 printer. I have an Intel Mac mini and OS X 10.4... Ran Lexmark's driver software (dated 2002) and it got stuck at that "Open Print Center" button (nothing happens when you click it)...

Then I went into PSU and checked "run as Rosetta" and was able to add my X84-X85 entry...

So, now that it shows as a printer... how can I operate the other functions, like fax and scan?
