Q: I cannot get the mail application to close and therefore cannot shut off my computer. Help?!!

This is a new problem... never had it before. The mail app won't close using all the ways of closing apps. Without it closing, the machine won't shut down, hence new installations cannot be uploaded. I tried just letting the battery run down, but it only put the computer into sleep mode. Any help would be most appreciated.  Thanks!
