You really shouldn't run commands that people on forums give you, at the very least get a second opinion from another site (or Google it).

Consult the manual first and have a backup.

https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man1/rm.1.html

Yes your files are really gone, 'rm' will make file recovery hard. Professional data specialists may be able to recover data or you could try yourself with tools like Disk Drill www.cleverfiles.com as long as you avoid writing any data to that disk it may be possible to recover.

The text you posted is not a valid command…

  • The path (Library/Caches) should go after the command
  • Using paths with 'rm' should really be explicit so you can see where they start e.g. /Users/ME/Library/Caches (it starts at /).
  • -r means recurse (decend into folders)
  • -f means attempt to force
  • -v means verbose (you get to watch as it deletes your stuff)
  • rm -rfv * means delete everything in the current path - the '*' is a wildcard tha matches everything.

Adding a -i flag would have caused a prompt which gives to you some chance of seeing the mistake as it happens.

Thanks, I know I'm a ******* and I do know better. I'm running data recovery now. this drive is ssd 3tb so it's been running for 18hrs and is about half done. I'm hopeful but not overly optomistic.

PC user for many yrs 25+, New to mac, but loving it. I've commited a series of errors that began with cleanmymac. Many spinning beachballs followed, read a lot of forums and the cache cleaning seemed reasonable. My Bad.

I know "Back up your files" i know. I have a 3tb backup drive coming tomorrow, If I have to start from scratch, I'll never make the same mistake again. Thanks for you help, I appreciate it.

You are not an idiot (or whatever it said 🙂). You simply got bit by a typo or advice that went a bit awry, it's something we all risk when trying to help here/ taking advice.

Terminal commands are very powerful, so don't be scared by them just take a lot of caution in applying them. I've also done bad things in Terminal. You don't seem to be totally phased by this so well done. Post back if you need more help and good luck with the recovery.

P.S.

I steer clear of the third party Mac cleaning utilities (CleanMymac, MacKeeper etc). The internet seems to be rife with adverts for this junk that is not really necesary. Mac OS is becoming more like Windows in this regard 😟.

Andy is correct about it nuking just your home directory, the default 'working directory' is your home folder.

Hi Drew

I have same issue and nearly used cmd posted by Warwick; fortunately I checked out other posts first. Would you look at the results I have from running Etrecheck? Understand if you can't. Many thanks in advance. Jayne

I've got a 3.5 year old Mac Mini 2.3 GHz Core i5 with 4 GB of RAM running OS X 10.9.2. A couple months ago, at no specific moment in time, my mini started to slow down, it's continued to get slower…
