super drive compatibility

Just purchased an Apple external usb dvd drive from the apple store.
it works well with imac 27" latest generation and macbook air 13" retina. But...not compatible with any other apple laptop around us including a macbook air 11" 2011 and a macbook pro 17" 2012.

All are running the latest version of macos x mavericks.

Internet says it is not compatible. Apple says nothing (no mention of compatibility issues in the online apple store requirement tab).

Any solutions ?
