If you upgrade past a working functional Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks,
you may not be able to simply revert to a previous system and in some cases
the install DVD may not work again. So, if you go there, be sure to set up an
external hard disk drive capable of booting the computer from, and make a,
Clone of the Snow Leopard 10.6.8 fully updated system before going ahead.
Once the Recovery partition is installed in the computer's HDD, it may not
allow you to go back to an earlier system; and in some MacBooks where a
firmware update may have been installed, this may also not show an older
OS X than Mavericks as an available system. This could be an issue, but in
some cases, it may not be.
{If you have to use a later iPhone or iPad, you may want to carefully look into
what OS X past Snow Leopard 10.6.8 that may require, and some upgrades
in the iOS in an iDevice cannot be reverted; so some devices used with certain
Mac OS X systems, should not be upgraded to a later iOS, if you may revert
the OS X in the computer you'd use to sync with the device. Read carefully.}

If you upgrade the MacBook and need iLife, you may choose to look for an older
version of iLife on DVD suited to the OS X you select to use; and note the iDVD
is lacking from some last versions of iLife on DVD media. You could buy it or all
of them from the Mac App Store once you upgrade, if you chose to do so. In
any event, it is always a good idea to create a bootable Clone on external hard
disk drive, with its own power supply so it does not need Mac port power to run.
Good luck in this matter, & happy computing! 🙂
