I have been reading the discussion 'Reverting back to Snow Leopard', started on the 25th of May, and note your advice :

Once you are forced to migrate to Mavericks (new Mac, etc.) you can run most PowerPC apps in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels. Be sure to order a copy of Snow Leopard Server from Apple now ( 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only)); for $20 and put it on the shelf for when you need it.

My questions :

1) Why do you suggest Snow Leopard Server? Would just Snow Leopard itself be sufficient?

I ask because I might find myself in the same postion as the OP, with a new system but needing to use some of the older apps still.

2) Would you recommend Parallels over Fusion? I have used Fusion with my SL machine, although Fusion would need some serious upgrading presumably for use with Yosemite. If Snow Leopard and Fusion will suffice, then I'd be all set for a Yosemite system.

I still wonder about the use of Fusion.

You didn't mention what version you have, but in general, Fusion should be interchangeable with Parallels with Snow Leopard Server. I just have more experience with Parallels, having purchased it for running Windows XP after I purchased my first Intel Mac.

Snow Leopard client takes much more work to install and more work to maintain than Snow Leopard Server, which now sells for the same price. Functionally they are substantially the same, and I even remove the Server Apps from the Dock, so as to not be confused by them.

What PowerPC apps do you need to run?

Thanks, Eric for jumping in as usual. I was busy getting the dung kicked out of me by my two least favorite anti-"virtualization of snow leopard" trolls on another thread all day long, most of which has now been removed for posterities' sake! 😁

I have to admit, now with you and the others continuing to spread the word about the availabilities of solutions to use Rosetta in Mavericks, I come to this forum on a more sporatic basis. We all thank you! 🙂

When a post is left for me on the MacRumors forum thread you link, it sends me an email about the new message. I found this thread due to my search for "Rosetta" and then "PowerPC."

Interestingly, there are NO anti-virtualization trolls on the MacRumors site... 🙂

Thanks for your reply, Michael.

My situation is as follows :

iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

4 GB memory

OS 10.6.8

Fusion v 3.1.1

A bit 'out of date', eh?

I used Fusion to run Windows XP but haven't had cause to use either in the past 3 to 4 years.

I am trying to plan ahead a bit, very tentatively. If I get a machine with Yosemite, and if my current iMac goes belly up, I want to be able to use a few apps that need Rosetta. There is no upgraded Intel version of the most valuable one.

Thus my interest in this whole discussion. I would have to buy a newer version of Fusion, or just go for Parallels, and hope to be able to continue using the few old apps I want to preserve.

I can't find a cheap version of SL Server here in the UK. There's a well known online seller, named after a big South American river, offering what purports to be the server version for £24.99, but it looks suspiciously like a mis-labelled client version. Another item for sale is described as Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard Unlimited Client, and goes for £99.17.

I'm a little cagey about the former, and the latter is overkill for what I need.
