Edit Table of Contents

I'm writing a novel using Pages 5

Using the Help notes I've attempted to create a Table of Contents doing the following:-

1. Insert page numbers in footer and justify to centre.

2. Allocate a page for TOC and click Insert TOC

3. Select Heading 2 for my chapter heading.

The TOC automatically generates itself.

For Example

Chapter One

3

Chapter Two

5

Could you please advise me how to edit to create

Chapter One..................................Page 3

Chapter Two..................................Page 5

etc

I select Table of Contents/Text in the Inspector, but what do I do next?

Dear PeterBreis0807,

I have a similar problem.

I would like my TOC entry to read:-

Chapter X: Encounters With Aliens ……………………………….. 56

But as the Chapter, and Chapter Sub Title are different Styles it reads:-

Chapter X:

Encounters With Aliens

……………………………………..

56

Converting a One Page TOC, into a FOUR page dirge.

I can get the entry on one line by using only the Chapter OR The Sub Title and unchecking the Hash column, but it does not do what I want, nor does it look good.

Using soft returns converts the styles to one style.

Can you help, or am I asking for something unavailable?

Thanks in anticipation,

Petra.

Pages T.O.C. entries are automatically styled by each entry.

eg All Heading 3 entries have the same paragraph style (which can be different from how they appear in the document).

Once you have exported and reimported the text into Pages you can apply whatever manual styling you want or applly your own Paragraph and Character Styling.

Character Style can be different from the Paragraph Style. In you case make it simply italic.

Tallberg & Petraw

You are not a nuisance. I hesitate to go into excessive detail, because some see this as patonising.

Menu > File > Export > Text

This exports the entire document, so just open the exported text file in TextEdit or similar then copy and paste the T.O.C. bit as plain old text back into your Pages document, so you can style it like any normal text.

You will not have links back to the relevant pages however.

That can be fixed with Bookmarks in Pages '08/'09 but not in Pages 5.2. Which as usual can't chew gum, let alone walk, and for sure not both at the same time.

Not really.

Menu > Pages > Provide Pages Feedback

Just goes nowhere in my experience. That was where we all posted our feedback, bugs and wishlists for Pages '09. …and it got us Pages 5!

Best in my opinion is to post in the App Store, because it is public, shares experiences with other users and gives a quick summation of where everyone else is feeling either the joy or the pain. It is also the hardest place for Apple to sweep the issues under the carpet and ignore them.

This solved my question.

Dear Peter,

Thanks, yet again, for your help.

I now have a table of contents worthy of the name.

As you pointed out the page numbers no longer link to the pages to which they refer, and I will have to learn how to bookmark to replace that functionality.

At the moment my research in that area is suggesting that I must go through Hyperlink and Bookmark, but it's early days in my investigation, that might change yet.

I agree with your assessment of the latest Pages, that is why I'm hanging on to Version 4.3 tightly. And I like your feedback idea of 'post in the App Store' I had a quick mental picture of me armed with scrolls reading

'Give us Back our Word Processor';

a bucket of paste;

and a long wide-head-brush, sneaking up to my local store.

I recon if I chose a busy School Holiday, I could get about five pasted over the glass doors before I got arrested.

Thanks again,

have some more points, {as soon as I find out how to give them to you!}

Good afternoon Peter,

Many thanks for your advice.

I have persevered with Pages V 5 and I think I have a solution to editing TOC while keeping the hyperlinks to the document.

Perhaps you would be good enough to look at the following.

Note: I use Page Setup = A5

Page Set Up = A5

Set Style for Chapter Headings

I use Styles Heading 2

Insert TOC = Wrong spacing etc

Select all of TOC = Blue

Inspector Text : Indents

Set First Indent to 0 cm. Don't change the others

Stops = 10cm (Seems OK for A5)

Alignment = Centre

Leader = your choice

Select all and modify colour and font if required

Please let me know what you think.

Regards from Wales, UK.
