I added a new alias to my iCloud account and I'd like to be able to receive that mail on my phone, but the set up for the phone account (on my phone) keeps asking for a password, and when you set up a alias no such password is assigned to it. I tried using the main iCloud account mail password but no joy. How should I set this up?

Try your Apple ID password.
If you can receive messages to the primary @icloud.com address then you need take no further action: messages to the alias turn up in the same inbox. You can't set an alias up as if it was a separate email account.
