Can't HotSync 1 of 2 Tungsten E2s to iMac G5 and iBook G4 via Bluetooth

I posted this last month and have had no answer but perhaps I was in the wrong Forum.

I have a puzzle that I can't resolve. It seems like it must be related to serial ports but I can't figure out how to fix it.

I have two Tungsten E2 handhelds. I am hotsyncing one of them via Bluetooth to my iMac G5; works great but it won't hotsync to the iBook G4. The second E2 used to hotsync via Bluetooth to the same G5, but now (after diddling with it to set it up to also hotsync with an iBook G4), it won't hotsync either place.

My Palm Desktop 4.2.1 for years has had two users setup. Bluetooth recognizes both devices....mine and the other one...but will now only hot sync mine.

The error message I get on the computer when I browse files is that it recognizes the device but it does not have the necessary services (says that about mine, too).

When I try to hotsync the second E2, the message on the handheld is that it's unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another application. An old story from what I've read in the discussions.

I've started from the beginning and one of the steps says select the connection method on the PC. I only get that choice on the handheld, e.g.', I've added serial port services through System Preferences/Bluetooth but finally deleted them because Transport Manager would not allow HotSync Manager to stay enabled if anything other than Bluetooth-PDA-Sync port and Palm Connect are enabled (USB is also enabled but I doubt if that matters)

The settings on both PDAs are exactly the same, yet one hotsyncs via Bluetooth and the other won't.

BTW-the type of setting for the Bluetooth-PDA-sync port doesn't seem to matter if it's Modem (which it continually defaults to) or RS-232. It syncs either way.

Can someone please help me get the second E2 Bluetooth hotsyncing again?

Then I'll go back to what started this mess: trying to hotsync it to the iBook G4. Browsing on the G5 validates all the devices including the iBook but says (for both E2s) that there are no supported services, yet I can transfer files between the G5 and the G4 and hotsync one E2!!!

Meant to mention that when I go into Preferences/Bluetooth, select either E2 device, then select the Devices Tab at the top, I then have the option to Edit Serial Ports. When I select Edit Serial Ports, it scans, both handhelds respond by beeping, but no serial ports are found. Then the Apply button highlights but there's nothing to select. It doesn't find the Bluetooth-PDA-sync-port. Neither does it find any Serial Port Services I added earlier. I've since deleted the ones I created. Is the problem above connected to this inability to recognize any ports in this step?

I can cable hotsync both PDAs to both computers but I still can't hotsync the one E2 via Bluetooth to either computer even though at one time I could Bluetooth hotsync it to the G5.

BTW what's a System Tray? Is that a PC term?

I've spent a LOT of time trying to resolve this myself. Hope this isn't too much info and that someone can offer some suggestions. Thanks

Did you not read the response I posted?

First, with regard to the 'system tray:' it's a popular term which describes the notification area of the taskbar which first appeared back in Windows 95. The Windows clock appears there, as do an number of notification icons like those used by MSN and AOL.

Second, you should not have PalmConnect enabled. PalmConnect is an outmoded, no-longer-available serial to USB conversion technology.

Third, the problem—as described in the technical note I pointed you to— indicates that this is the result of a Bluetooth-related mis-configuration (created inadvertently by users) and it offers a solution to it, using the Palm Zire 72 as the example. You cannot correct it unless you implement the instructions Palm provides, unless you perform a hard reset on your troublesome handheld, in which case you will lose all of the information on it, returning it to the 'factory' state.

There are some issues you allude to regarding missing Bluetooth profiles or services, but those should be dealt with by a hard reset, and the re-pairing of the device with your computer.

I did, Michael, thank you, and I answered you on Sept. 10th. It's a Bluetooth issue, you said. I've been working on other things and need to get them resolved before I'm comfortable that my backup Palm info is OK before I do a hard reset.

I've got a conflict of some sort that has effected my hard drive and external backup.. it's related to my mouse behavior and my inability to keep open finder and application windows. I need to get that squared away before I'm comfortable that I can retrieve the backup Palm Desktop data.

I marked your reply as helpful...was that not right?

I posted it by mistake in the iSync forum but it isn't an iSync issue, so I reposted here and closed that out.

If you get your issue resolved with Michael's help I hope you'll post here. I can't work on it because, now that my mouse problem is fixed, the Laptop and the 'problem' TE2' are out-of-town for the week. 🙂 Good luck with it.
