punch in/punch out recording

what happens if you've recorded a whole section of a song but there is one bit in the middle you want to re do without having to re record the whole thing. ie can you set garage band to play back and start recording at a specific designated spot and then stop recording at a specific designated spot while all the time you can hear the original play back?? It used to be called something like 'punch in/punch out recording' or something like that??? I sure hope someone out there knows what i'm talking about. i'm not talking about 'takes'. i'm talking about jumping in and jumping out to re record just a small section.

You mean "punch in"?

You could set the cycle region to just the region you want to replace, but I find it much more convenient to creat a copy of the track and to record the new take in the second track. Then trim the new recording and paste it into the original track.

The procedure you talk about is called Autopunch. It is not available in GarageBand X, only in Logic Pro X.

Here is a screenshot of Logic. You activate the Autopunch button and set the Autpunch Area (similar to the Cycle Area) where Logic punches in and out automatically. You just start playback before the punch-in location.

The Problem in GarageBand is, that you cannot even manually punch in and out properly. When GarageBand is playing and you hit the Record button (the Record Enable Button on the Track Header has to be enabled for that), GarageBand switches to Record Mode and when you hit the Record Button again, it switches back to Play Mode. The problem is that you have a short interruption during punch in and out (which makes that procedure pretty useless). The reason for that, GarageBand doesn't have the "Quick Punch-In" feature that allows you to seamlessly switch between Play and Record Mode.

Hope that helps
