Q: MacBook Pro 2009 15"

Hi, just got a brand new genuine battery and magsafe for my MacBook Pro as the cycle count on the old one was 1250 and the magsafe was abit shabby.

My MacBook when plugged in, shows 'battery is not charging' however when I use the MacBook for about 10-20 minutes the LED on the magsafe end changes to orange and starts charging.. when I remove the Magsafe again it takes a little while to get it to charge.

Was just wondering if anybody knows why this is happening and any ideas what I can do ?

Thanks

MacBook Pro

If yours is the model with removable battery panel on the bottomof the MBP, take the battery out and check the connector on the computer and the battery panel, clean the connector if necessary.  Try again and see if that helps.

If this is not the removable model, have it checked by the Apple store genius bar techs to see why the charging circuit is not responding correctly.

Also, is the charger the right model for the MBP?  See:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346

Thanks for your reply, my MacBook is not the one with the battery under the panel that easly comes out, It has to have the base removed. I've just put the new battery in today.

I wouldn't take it in to apple as I can fix the laptop myself if I know what need's replacing.

Could it be possible that it could be the point where the MagSafe plugs into ?

It had a Logicboard replacement in 2011 and it has been in for diagnostics this year by the previous owner but they just said it need's another logic board (That's all they ever say)

Ok, you can troubleshoot the MagSafe by following http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713 but it sounds like the problem is more involved...replacing a logic board and now saying it needs another would point to the charging circuit itself.  That is not going to be an easy item to service, a logic board would be easier to do.

Check the MagSafe connector pins and see that all are straight and clean.  Try a different charger and see if that changes the behavior.  Beyond that having the techs at the genius bar run their advanced diagnostics would be the best source of info.

Oh.. it says that the MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009) takes a 65w charger.. It came with a 85w so i assumed it needed a 85w L connection so that's what I've got now..

    Could this be why ?

You might also perform a SMC reset and let the battery charge till it reaches 100%.

    Ciao.

Should work fine with that charger, but definitely do the SMC as OG says, that often helps...cannot do any harm, either.

I also looked on YouTube, some guy said he took the battery out, held the power button for 3 seconds with no power, put the power back to the machine, turn it on. then turn it off. leave it for a few seconds then put the battery back in and turn it on with the magsafe connected

    Is this worth trying aswell...

That is basically an SMC reset for a MacBook Pro that has a removable battery...the technique in the HT3964 article for the non-removable battery models uses a key stroke combination to bypass the internal battery.  So the technique you describe will work as an SMC reset, you do not need to do it that way, i.e., remove the battery.

It is really up to you, but I would do the reset as the article describes and not mess with opening and removing the battery if it isn't necessary.  More opportunity to break something.

Just a update, the LED is now not coming on the charger end when been plugged into the laptop, it just instantly say's 'Battery is not charging' and the percentage is going down..

    Any ideas?

There is something not communicating between the MagSafe connector and the battery...you might try removing the battery again, check the contacts to see they are clean and reattach to see all is connected properly.  Check to see the cabling from the MagSafe port to the logic board is undamaged, and all is attached correctly.  If none of that helps, then you need to look into having an Apple tech test the system for you to see where the connections are breakng down.

Even when the light on the MagSafe is not on it will instantly show battery is not charging. As soon as the MagSafe is attached to the laptop it will show that.

So it knows it's been plugged in.

Is it worth me replacing the socket where the charger plugs into as there only £9 and are easy to fit or is there no point?

That's all I'm left with that I can try, I have £130 in it at the moment and I know I can get £250+ as it is now, so I don't really want to spend much on it!

    Please let me know thanks

Been out all day, so getting back a little with this...I am not convinced the issue is with the connector, but if the replacement is easy and cheap, why not go ahead.  But since you will have the case all opened up for that, take the time to check out the battery connection, all of the cables, and especially the wiring from the connector to the logic obard and battery.  See that everything appears to be connected right as there is something in that circuit path not doing its job.

Thanks for your reply. For now I'm going to check the connections and try and reseat the MagSafe connection on the logic board and see if the connections all look ok.

    I'll update you.

    Thanks for all your help
