Q: Will an iphone 4 from the UK work in the US if unlocked?

My son purchased an iphone 4 while he was stationed in the UK through the carrier Vodafone. Vodafone has instructions of how to unlock the phone, but when I put my US sim card in I still get "No Service". I've heard that the GSM is different in Europe than in the US. Could this be the reason the phone is not working?

This is how unlocking works on iPhones

GSM is the same the world over, .a UK iPhone as long as it is unlocked will wotk in the US without problems ,on a US GSM carrier such as AT&T
I doubt the iPhone has been unlocked or the process was not completed by restoring the iPhone after receiving the notice it has been unlocked
