Key Commands Mystery

Hi guys

I have this weird problem with the key commands in LPX: many of them don't work no matter what preset I choose (U.S. or Logic 9, it makes no difference). An example of this is the zoom function in the arrange window; the key command in the key command editor clearly states that to zoom press cmd+ arrow up, down, left right. This, however, only works for vertical zooming not for horizontal. Instead of zooming in and out the screen flashes when I press the key command and the cursor changes into the marquee tool. And when I press and hold the alt key the cursor changes into magnifying glass (zoom tool), but I still can't use the arrow keys to change the level of zoom.

I am using a Danish keyboard, but Logic apparently changes this automatically to U.S. since it doesn't support the Danish keyboard. Could this somehow change the key commands in LPX?

Back when I used Logic 9 I never had any of these issues, and the key commands inside Logic's key command editor worked just fine.

I also noticed that when I press "B"(as in hide/show Smart Controls) nothing happens, not even when I press "Hide Smart Controls" in the "View" tab on top of the screen.

First... try reseting the key commands back to their originals..

Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

  1. In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
  2. Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
  3. Press the Go button.
  4. Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
  5. If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove ~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
  6. Restart the computer.

Thanks for replying to my question.

I followed the steps you mentioned here, but I still can't use the horizontal zoom key command (cmd+left or right arrow key).

However, if I change to Logic 9 preset I can use the old horizontal key command.

I've been experiencing this problem for months and nobody has come up with a solution.

But thank you for at least trying!

Whats strange is the zoom horizontal command in LP9 keycommand set is actually Cntrl + Opt + L or R Arrow

Its only Cmd + Arrow in LPX's keycommand set

Check the keycommand list and see what yours is set to...

Go to Menu item Logic Pro X -> Key Commands ->Edit

Now type zoom in the search box in the new window that has opened and look/see what it is actually set to...

Just to confirm... I tested out under both key command sets (LP9 and LPX) and as listed above, each key command worked correctly depending on which key command set was selected.

I went ahead and assigned a new set of key commands for horizontal and vertical zooming successfully, and here the issue became apparent: Logic does not recognize me pressing the combination of cmd+the left/right arrow, but it does recognize it when I add another modifier or key. In other words, after reassigning the directional zoom key commands, I could only use the cmd+UP/DOWN arrows on for assigning a new key command, but Logic completely ignored the combination "cmd+ LEFT/RIGHT arrow".

The only way for me to get the original key commands for horizontal zooming to appear again in the editor, is if I click the "Initialize all key commands" button in options.

Upon further investigation, it turns out that the issue is not tied to Logic in anyway: when opening the keyboard settings in my mac's System Preferences I can see that the left and right arrows are not being "activated"(pressed, which Keyboard settings viewer shows by greying out the keys that are pressed down) when I use the key command "cmd+LEFT/RIGHT arrow", but the combination "cmd+UP/DOWN arrow" are being "activated"(pressed).

(I am not pressing "cmd+LEFT/RIGHT arrow in this picture; this was only taken to show you what I mean by "activate"/greying out of keys.)

In other words; the combination "cmd+LEFT/RIGHT arrow" does not work in any other software on my mac or any other context.

I thought of buying a new keyboard to test out if something is (physically) broken in the one built into my mac. But I figured that wouldn't make any sense, since I don't have any trouble using the left and right keys when not using this particular key command, or in any other setting or context.

The temporary solution of simply reassigning the set of key commands for zooming is definitely something I can live with, since every other key command in Logic works perfectly.

However, I'd still like to know why my mac does not understand/recognize "cmd+LEFT/RIGHT arrow"..!

Check the following;

Go to OS X System preferences -> Keyboard and select the Shortcut tab..

Now go through each of the groups show in the window that appears and check if anything else has been assigned to the CMD+left/right arrow... Uncheck/delete if needed...

Another possibility is you have some other app running in the background that is over-riding the CMD+left/right arrow shortcut... so make sure you stop all other apps running including any running in the background.. (Check the menubar for example..)

It could also be caused by a conflict between the country type of keyboard you are using....and the keycommand set you have choosen in Logic I suppose.. Which country's keyboard do you have selected in OS X's System prefs -> Keyboard ->Input Sources? Which keyboard shows up there?

One last thing would be if somehow one of your modifier keys has got reassigned...(if CMD combos dont work at all...)

Check under Sys prefs/Keyboard Keyboard tab and then press the modifier keys button and make sure all of them are correctly set especially the Command modifier one... to the command key

Some of these are literally "plucking at straws" to try and work out whats going on.. but of course, yes.. try out a different keyboard in case you have some kind of weird fault with your built in keyboard that is causing this, if you can...
