Has Aperture always been slow, or did it start only recently?

Tell us more about your system:

  • What version of Aperture and MacOS X are you using?
  • How much free disk space?
  • What kind of iMac? Processor? How much RAM?
  • Where is your Aperture library located? Internal drive? External drive? How is the drive connected?

Independent of the hardware, can you have problems with with Aperture being slow,

  • because of incompatible plug-ins
  • because of corrupted media files (images, videos) in your Aperture library
  • because of inconsistent database files in the Aperture library due to crashes
  • corrupted preferences files or presets in your user library
  • duplicate fonts or other system wide installation problems.

If your hardware is relatively new and you have plenty of RAM, check for one of the problems above, see: Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
