Q: I am interested in stoping renting things from comcast.

I am interested in not paying comcast 10 dollars a month for my internet hardware. I would like to just buy an apple airport. How can I start to do this once I have bought it? Do I need to contact comcast? Or do I just plug it in. Also I was reading something about a modem and a router. But I just have one xfinity box so that confused me,

The internet hardware/box I use is a smcd3gnv.

The Apple AirPorts do not have a modem on board the router, so you will still need to lease a modem from Comcast.....or you could buy one that they recommend for use with their service.

The AMCD3gnv that you have now is a modem/router. It combines the functions of a separate modem and router into one package.

If you return the SMC device to Comcast, you will still need to lease or buy a modem to work with the AirPort. You want a modem only.....not a modem/router.

Years ago I bought a Motorola sb6120 modem, connected it to the coaxial cable from Comcast, and turned the comcast modem back in, saving myself that monthly charge.

I then bought an airport extreme, ran an ethernet cable from the modem to it, and went wireless. Not very difficult.

Of course, Comcast then changed things up for me, and the only way I could get the hd channels I want with the 50Mbps internet was to get their triple play, so in the closet went the modem and airport extreme.

Just saying check out the modems that comcast says are compatible, buy one, and save the monthly charge.
