All my browsers keep redirecting and opening unrelated pages and pop ups on my mac. I am tired of looking for answers and finding only bougus software. How do I fix this? It's insane that everywhere I look I see people saying that Mac's are usually unaffected by viruses. This problem is happening on Google Chrome and Safari.

I recently installed something called Mac Keeper and thats when all my problems began. I tried dragging it to the garbage and deleting it but the problem persists. I hav searched every where in the Home/Library/ etc and found no other references to it but I keep getting redirected. Especially when I type the word redirect in the search field. AAARRRRGGGGHH!!

I want to put the people in these companies that infect your computer so that you have to buy there products to remove them up against a wall and burn them alive!

(Someone please give me a name!)

Please help!

Do not install MacKeeper (and how to uninstall it if you have):

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6221

(Please note that references to the original developers, Zeobit, also now refer to Kromtech Alliance Corp, who acquired MacKeeper and PCKeeper from ZeoBit LLC in early 2013.)

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up* as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here:
http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions and here: http://www.opendns.com/technology/opendns-vs-google-public-dns/ )

and further independent information can be read here:

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt

and here:

* as confirmed by: http://lifehacker.com/5835775/google-dns-and-opendns-users-are-getting-a-web-spe ed-boost

and Apple:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US

but results may vary depending on where you are located.

If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)

I am having this exact problem. How do I uninstall when Mackeeper is not in my applications? I have tried to uninstall it and it says the app is not there, but the ads and redirecting still pop up. Please help 😟

I would recommend contacting Thomas Reed at his website http://www.thesafemac.com/ and asking him.

Also, please DO NOT treat your Mac like a MS Windows box. OS X does not need any, repeat ANY third party apps to maintain itself. This includes antivirus apps, cleaning apps, performance enhancing etc. It runs best if left alone and if your run Software Update weekly and install any recommended updates.

Good luck.

Seeing MacKeeper ads doesn't mean Mackeeper is installed. It means that you have some problem that is causing improper ads to be displayed on your machine, and MacKeeper is something that is aggressively marketed, often through less ethical means.

You probably have adware installed, in which case the recommendation Klaus1 has given will probably solve the issue. It may also be something else, such as a hacked wireless router. If AdwareMedic doesn't fix the problem, be sure to pay close attention to the FAQ in its documentation as to what steps to try next.
