When I try to listen to some music, I get a Launch Application box asking me to choose an application. Is there a way whereby a drop down list of appropriate applications could be displayed? I've tried WMP but that doesn't work. Apologies for being very green with regards to tech matters

I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on how exactly you are attempting to play your music. If you are selecting music from within iTunes, it should automatically play. If you are selecting music files outside of iTunes and would like to make it the default application, you may find the following article helpful (it is aimed at Windows 7, but the steps for Windows 8 should be similar):
