Q: iMac is running unbelievably slow - please help!

The "wheel of death" appears constantly, even when just trying to switch from one application to another.  It was pretty bad before, but once I upgraded to Maverick it's become unbearable. Typical applications that I have open concurrently include mail, safari, office. If I want to run Parallels or Photoshop, I have to close everything else, and even so I have time to go make a sandwich while the apps load.  I'm considering upgrading RAM, but before I do so I want to be sure there's nothing else I can do to make the system run more efficiently.  Appreciate any advice. Specs are below, let me know if I can provide more info.

My specs: OSX 10.9.2

I "ejected" my Maxtor backup drive.  I'll see if the system runs any better as the day goes on.  However, I run a scheduled backup everyday so in a perfect world would like to be able to keep the drive connected.

If you removed the PACE Interlok driver, which has nothing whatsoever to do with your problem, then the content-creation software that depends on it will no longer work.

At this point, I'm not aware of which apps used the PACE driver.  If & when it becomes apparant, I'll just reinstall the app(s) if needed.
