Q: Match process stalling out at end

I've been using iTunes Match for about a year and a half and have started experiencing a new problem in the last couple of days.  I've added a few new tracks to my library over the last couple of days and have attempted to "Update iTunes Match." However, the matching process is stalling out at the end.  It looks like it's just about to finish but then it never does.  I have downloaded the most up-to-date version of iTunes, I have stopped and restarted the "Update iTunes Match" process numerous times.  I have closed and reopened iTunes several times.  I have restarted my computer and started over.  Etc. Etc. and the same problem keeps occurring.  Last night, I let the matching process continue overnight and it still had not finished in the morning.  I am at my wit's end at this point.  It's only 11 new songs that I'm trying to get iTunes to Match.  Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to resolve this problem?  Thanks!

I've had this problem for a couple of weeks. I called AppleCare and I was eventually told this would be fixed by Apple (problems with server) in a week. Well today I noticed my ripped CD's (three of them) finally got matched and are available to play on my iOS devices. I hope this works for everyone now.

For everyone getting 4010 error messages, try the following:

Select the track(s) in your libray that you want iTunes to upload.  Right click that single track (or group of tracks) and select "add to icloud".  After that, attempt to "update iTunes Match".

This method just worked for me moments ago.  When I tried to "update iTunes Match" without the intermediary step of hitting "add to icloud," I got the 4010 error message but with the added step described above I was able to avoid the 4010 error message.

Let me know how you make out with this suggestion.

Oh wow I just got a half-decent response from iTunes support! (It wasn't just copy-pasted from a forum post this time -- big improvement).

He also asked for screenshots if it doesn't work -- THAT'S LIKE A UNICORN!

He recommended holding shift while turning off iTunes Match (Option on Mac) -- and it actually worked! iTunes Match is now enabled again, no 4010 errors!

iTunes is showing no music, but it said "9000 songs available", so I'll wait for it to finish downloading. Then I'll try the "Add to iCloud" method suggested by Ryan -- if that's working again, I'll be very happy.

Edit: just finished downloading, all previously uploaded/matched music is there, which is great.

iTunes is now frozen, unfortunately, but "Add to iCloud" WORKS!!! And it showed up on my iPhone!

Thanks for the tip of holding down shift, that has got rid of the 4010 errors.

Individual album uploads this morning (19 Beatles Albums) 4 out of the 19 matched, 15 hung on stage 3 (uploading)

    79% Fail Rate

Perhaps I should just pay 79% of my $25

    Thanks for the update bennettp1234,

I actually had tried doing this previously but thought I'd give it another shot this morning, surprisingly iTunes Match actually uploaded some of the tracks pending, I had 18 which I've been trying to upload since the beginning of the month.

Mixed results, as 12 tracks uploaded then it stopped uploading again and since I've had no luck adding the remaining 6 tracks which are from the same album. So back to square one. Think I got lucky this morning but still seems to be an issue somewhere. Every attempt since has failed to upload those 6 remaining tracks.

Got up this morning to find roughly half of the tracks that won't upload have finally uploaded. (didn't do anything special to trigger this). But it is stuck again now and the rest won't go... Downloading the uploaded tracks on iOS devices also isn't reliable, keep having to restart the downloads- but got there in the end. Hoping this means it is starting to free up presumably because of work on the server side, but it's certainly not working properly.

I resubscribed to iTunes Match after Apple issued me a refund when the first subscription was a total waste of money, as zero songs would matched or upload.

Second time around, the initial match/upload of my library of 17000 songs worked fine, this was about 3 months ago, but in the last month, whenever I have tried to add new songs, and iTunes begins the match/upload action, it is only returning a 3231 error code and hanging on the 'uploading remaining songs and artwork' notice.

It seems like there are way too many other people experiencing issues with iTunes Match for Apple to be ignoring it.

Well I have my own photographic business, and it's just like someone wanting a framed image, so I go ahead and take their order but son't supply the frame. If I personally did that for periods as long as this issue has been going I would be out of business.

But Apple are just not accepting responsibility at all - time to move on.

I tinkered around a bit today, and now it seems to be stuck at step two instead of three. Woohoo.

I've decided to take the plunge and purge everything I have stored in iTunes Match just to test it. I've already ensured that everything I had stored in iTunes Match has been downloaded to my iMac, I've also gone round all of my Macs and iOS devices, turned off iTunes Match, de authorised the machines and cleared any iTunes Match cache as well as iTunes Store cache, I'm pretty much switching it all off.

Just waiting on a Time Machine backup completing on the iMac, I've logged in to a temp user account on one of my machines, signed in to iTunes Match and purged everything I had stored by deleting everything I had stored on the cloud. Moment of truth will come once this backup is complete and I log in to iTunes and enable iTunes match.

    I'll keep you guys posted.

I'm done with iTunes Match. Been a subscriber since the beginning. It's just not worth the grief & stress. Maybe they will fix it, maybe they won't. If the do fix it, what are the chances something else will take it down in the future? My guess would be pretty high. This service has been buggy since the beginning and I have had enough Apple. Going back to just syncing my music through the white cord that actually works. Nice knowing you, iTunes Match!

Given the recent WWDC announcements, I'd say it's possible that they're redoing the back end servers.

More like: it's made redundant by some other service. When it's working, iTunes Match is a great product, so if they do shut it down, they'll have something better to replace it. (Again, given the recent WWDC announcements, I'd say this is likely, and I hope this is what happens).

Update this morning, deleting everything from iTunes Match after I consolidated everything I had on it onto one Machine and one iTunes library did the trick.

It did take a while, not sure how long but left iTunes Match on step 3 which sat at uploading 0 of 233 tracks overnight then woke up this morning to find that all 233 tracks waiting had uploaded.

One annoying bug that took a while to clear was playlists, for some reason despite these being deleted with all my iTunes match music they kept re-appearing for a while and duplicating, deleting the playlists from my iPhone seemed to fix this however.

Not sure if I had something corrupt in my iTunes Match library that was causing problems or I managed to trigger something else by doing that reset, however I will say it does take a while for iTunes to start uploading tracks which may also suggest congestion, it could be that the upload servers allocate slots to each client and you wait in some queue until the service can handle your request. (Would explain why some people have had luck but it took several hours before uploading).

How I Reset my iTunes Match library

    1. I'd always recommend downloading everything you have from iTunes Match to one machine so that you have a local copy of all of your music stored in one iTunes library on one Mac or PC. Perform a complete backup of that music library.
    2. Turn off iTunes Match (holding the Option / Shift key to clear its cache), Sign out of iTunes Store and de-authorise all of your PCs/Macs.
    3. Open iTunes Preferences / Settings on each machine click Advanced and Clear iTunes Store Cache.
    4. Create a new user account on one of your PCs/Macs and sign in to it, open iTunes and log in to iTunes Store then turn on iTunes Match.
    5. Once iTunes Match has loaded into the new iTunes library, select up to 1,000 of your iTunes Match tracks from that library and delete them.
    6. After deleting the 1,000 tracks selected, tell iTunes Match to update from the Store menu.
    7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 until all of your music has been deleted from iTunes Match.
    8. Delete all playlists you have (you may want to show the sidebar to do this if it isn't already enabled from the View menu).
    9. Final update to iTunes Match from the store menu and you should see it tell you that there are no songs available in the cloud.

Now that your iTunes Match library has been reset:

    1. Log back on to the computer you downloaded everything on to earlier.
    2. Open iTunes and sign in to the iTunes Store, authorise the machine from the Store menu.
    3. Turn on Genius and let it update, this may take a while but it's worth having Genius updated first before re-enabling iTunes Match.
    4. Turn On iTunes Match and add the device by logging in.
    5. Let iTunes Match run, this will take some time depending on the size of your library.
    6. You should get to Step 3 and it may sit there uploading 0 of X tracks after matching so many in your library has progressed somewhat if it hasn't already uploaded everything it needs to.

Let me know if this helps.
