The file is only 1 month old, and my pages app is v5.2. I just downloaded pages for the first time in March, and I don't have any iWork folders or older versions of pages.

I am having the same problem. Both users downloaded Pages a week ago, file was sent via Gmail and it says that "Pages document cannot be opened". Any help would be appreciated.
Pages 5 uses a complex and obscure zipped package as a file format, which is not handled well except by Apple's Mail and iCloud.
You can try zipping it before sending it in GMail.

I haven't emailed it or anything. I created the file on my macbook, and saved it in my documents folder, just like I've been doing for a couple months. I went to open it yesterday, and started getting this error. I will try to send it and reopen it.
Sounds like you do have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Nope. I don't have an iWork folder. This Macbook is only 3 months old. I just started using pages when I got it. This is not the solution.
Helps if you give the exact full message when you try to open the file, or a screensnap.

Here is all I get. But I'm running Pages 5.2. And I've never used iWork or older versions of Pages. I've searched my computer and I can find only 1 pages app. I've also gone to the App store to try and update or download a new version of Pages, but it says what I have is the latest update.
"You need a newer version of Pages to open this document. You can download the latest version of Pages from the Mac App Store." I tried to add a screen shot of the error message.
Have you simply double clicked on the file or have you tried to open it from within Pages 5.2?
That is exactly the message you get when you try and open any version of a Pages 5 file with any previous version, including Pages '09, or any of the earlier versions of Pages such as Pages 5.0, 5.01, 5.1.
I call it creeping incompatibility.
To take a screen shot hit command shift 4 and drag it over what you want to capture.
The screenshot is saved to your desktop and you attach it here with the camera icon.

And I have tried both ways of opening the file. Double click or "open with".
And whilst in this version of Pages you have checked Menu > Pages > About Pages and it says it is v5.2?
If this is all checked then congratulations, you have hit yet another major Pages 5 stuff-up.
I am constantly warning users against using Pages 5 for real work.
Your work is important. You do not want a document shredder dressed up as a fax.

Yes. It is definitely v5.2. I'm at a loss for what to do. I created the file on my Mac, I did not send it anywhere, and now I can't even open it with the program that created it.
We had lots of problems with unopenable files from previous versions of Pages 5.
Had hoped that Pages 5.2 finally fixed that, but apparently not.
