DVD Remote Control buttons don't work when using regular DVD player

I created a DVD using DVD Studio Pro (version 3.0.2) and am unable to navigate through any menus or buttons using the DVD players remote control. I can press the play button on the actual DVD player and play the movie. How can I fix this issue? Any suggestions would be helpful!

I never changed the default setting on the file I made and the DVD works just fine in the simulator as well as any computer DVD player. Also, is there a way to make sure the DVD will play on all DVD players even if it doesn't read burned DVDs?

Thanks for the help!

Hi Meghan,

Go into your Menu Viewers Settings (right top corner in the Menu viewer) and click on the "auto assign buttons now" (leave unchecked "auto assign buttons continuously"). Then go into each button's properties to tweak its' up, down, left, right button navigation routing to make sure it makes sense.

Take care,

Trai

PS. If this solves your problem please give me a "solved" star; I'm trying to catch up with good Drew and Hal! 🙂

In Simulator, without using your mouse amd using the up, down, left, right arrows, can you navigate? Did you set highlights for each button? How did you make the button (drag/drop and type text?) Did you check the box to include text in highlights?

Also, no joke, check the batteries on the remote, have seen it happen before and have also seen people use the wrong keys (should use the up, down, left, right buttons, and I have seen that one alot also.)

I did test the arrow keys in the simulator, and was able to navigate. (I don't know whether that's a good sign or not?!) I set the highlight for each button and confirmed that I checked the box "include text in highlight" I created the buttons using the preset buttons in DVD Studio Pro, i dragged, dropped and typed my own text. Would using the buttons from DSP cause the arrows on the remote not to work?

Also, just incase, I'll check the batteries on my remote. But I had a problem with the navigation and so did my client, so i'm guessing that's not the issue.

Means that it is working, which is good sign, but would have been an easy fix if it was not. So just confirming, using the arrow buttons on the silver controller (up, down, left, right) you are able to move and see all the highlights (and the text highlighting changing colors?)

Would using the buttons from DSP cause the arrows on the remote not to work?

I have not heard of that happening. There is somethings that can prevent highlights from being seen (such as using layers of Photoshop files instead of flattened picts)

But I had a problem with the navigation and so did my client, so i'm guessing that's not the issue.

You are probably right about that.

Here is something I just realized. How old is your computer? Sometimes older video cards do not work properly for rendering. If you delete you PAR and MPEG files and go to the preferences for DVD SP from Hardware to Software rendering, that may be what is affecting this

Not sure if I can add anything here - you're in good hands! I'd like to know how you constructed the menus - did you use photoshop layers for the background and overlay, or did you use a pict file? Are these motion menus or static?

About the compatibility - a burned disc will only ever be about 85% compatible with the number of DVD players out there, and if a DVD player states that it cannot read from DVD-R or DVD+R discs then it most likely won't play your disc. The only way to approach full compatibility is to have the disc replicated, but the cost of this usually means it is not worth while for anything less than 500 to 1000 discs at a time. If you are using DVD±R then all you can do is take steps to make sure the disc is as compatible as it can be, such as keeping the MPEG encode less than 7.5MBPS, using AC3 audio, not applying paper labels and so on.

Compatibility is getting better in general, this summer I have burned in excess of 90 individual projects on DVD-R (and duplicated each one up to seven times each) for playback on consumer players and only one came back (so far). When I looked at it there was a chunk missing from the surface of the disc, which probably explained the error!
