Can anyone help with my iBook?

Hi just bought a iBook A1005 with Mac OSX 10.4.11 from an Online Garage Sale in my community. The charger was not working so I ordered one off of eBay. It worked fine after that but I wanted to put some of my music on iTunes. iTunes 4 was installed on the computer but for some reason it could not connect to the iTunes Store. So I found the last compatible iTunes for my OS on Apple Support. It installed fine after I change where stuff downloads to from Safari. But when I went to install it, it asked for a password. I bought this used so I didn't know the password. So I followed this tutorial http://www.macyourself.com/2009/08/03/how-to-reset-your-mac-os-x-password-withou t-an-installer-disc/ and changed my password. It then restarted, there was a chime, the regular grey apple loading screen, but something new a login screen. I entered my new password and it seemed to start regularly with a light blue screen. It stayed with that light blue screen for around 10 minutes, but then it started up without the dock and just a window that showed me what is on my hard drive. I held the power button to shut it down and turned it back on, but the same thing happened. Could anyone help me with this?

I don't think 10.4.11 can get into the iTunes Store at all.

Hold al or Option key at boot, what shows as boot choices.

The method you did should create a whole new user.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),if you can log into one user... run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

You may be able to upgrade the total RAM installed in the iBook G4

depending on what the System Profiler shows as a current total.

Usually the upgrade slot under the keyboard can utilize a 1024MB

SO-DIMM chip. The exact part depends on exact identity of iBook.

Also, the hard disk drive may be getting tired, as they do wear out

and fail after some point in time. And if there was content inside

the computer when you got it (former owner accounts, etc) that

would be a candidate for a secure erase & install; if you have the

system install-restore discs that should've been included w/ Mac.

If you have anything saved to the hard disk drive in the iBook from

your use interval, those items could be saved to external storage

for safe-keeping, in case the iBook's ATA/IDE internal HDD fails.

An external enclosed hard disk drive in a FireWire housing, with

its own power supply and FW400 ports, could be helpful. Also

be sure if you get one, the product has an 'oxford-type' chipset.

That way you could use a clone utility to make bootable system

backup copies on an external hard disk drive. Helpful, too, should

you need to wipe the internal drive and want to restore a system

and your files from a complete backup. Or run the iBook from it.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
