Youtube Facebook Google etc, Invalid URL error

For many years now I've been putting up with a CONSTANT lingering problem with my Mac OS. These (on a very regular basis) irritating, "Invalid URL" errors.

The picture that you see below is an example of my problem. This example of a Youtube video giving me an error is from a recent article on www.macrumors.com.

Where the youtube video is supposed to be is just an Error. And as I scrolled down the page, all of the subsequent youtube videos had this same error.

So I went to youtube. After typing in the web address, I get the same error except that it fills the entire screen.

After about 20 minutes (of constant screen refreshes and data dumps within safari) the youtube videos finally loaded as if nothing was wrong (as you can see in the second photo).

Sometimes this problems lasts for 10 seconds. But normally it can take between 10 minutes to an hour to begin working again.

The other two websites that give me this same trouble is Google.com and Facebook.com. But Facebook being the most notorious. Not just because my actual facebook page won't load, but because of all of the news sites that load facebook garbage and coding searching for facebook. When the facebook ip address cannot be resolved, these annoying error pop-ups begin bombarding my screen. One minute facebook will work, and I'm reading down the newfeed, then all of the sudden nothing new will load. When I try to refresh the page, I get an error stating that it cannot load the page. Then I just have to wait.

As you can see from the picture below, Sometimes facebook just gives me an error that states, "Safari cannot open the page Facebook.com because Safari cannot establish a secure connection to the facebook server."

This happens EVERY single day. It's really just a crap-shoot whether or not I will be able to get onto Facebook.

Youtube is a little less often (usually happening about 3 or 4 times per week).

Google got so bad that I finally had to change my search provider to Bing, because Google almost never worked.

Has anyone else experienced these problems on their MAC?

I ask because I have 3 MAC computers. 2 Laptops and a MacPro tower.

And EVERY single one has this same problem.

This wasn't such a big deal; ie something I learned to live with... Up until I bought my wife (and Windows Vista convert) her new Macbook Air. And within an hour of booting that thing up for the first time, her Facebook errored out. And has done it pretty consistantly every day, at least twice, since then.

If anyone else has this problem, how did you fix it????????

Back up all data.

Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.

In Safari, select

Safari ▹ Preferences... Privacy Remove All Website Data

and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?

Notes:

1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in theNetwork preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must click Apply in order for any changes to take effect.

2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

Mr Davis,

I don't know how else to do this because I just joined the applue support community and I don't know how else you will see it, but I posted a reply in an earlier discussion of yours regarding the "app store error 13" that you last replied to on June 3, but sylvain.bonnard never got back to your last request. I posted the information you requested, can you go take a look at it? I keep getting the error (13) as well.

Thanks!

There are a couple possibilities that spring to mind.

One, which I believe Linc is also considering, is that you have a problem with your network. Do the laptops ever experience this problem when they are on a network other than your usual network? If not, that's strong evidence of a network problem. In this case, since you've been experiencing the problem for years, I would guess there's a problem with the configuration of your wireless router. Try resetting it to factory settings.

If the laptops have the problem no matter what network they are on, you probably have some software installed that is causing the problem.

Jun 11, 2014 8:10 AM in response to Event Video Guy

Router? No. Brand new. I've been having these troubles since about 2010.

Which computers? Both laptops and the desktop.

The MacBook Air is brand new and has nothing installed on it. My wife did all the sign up screens fresh out of the box and within 1 hours was having problems with Facebook error.

Software installed? Probably not. My computers are pretty clean. Video editing software QuickTime and office. That's about it.

MacBook Air only has ms office. But I just installed that about 3 days ago. And her laptop is 2 weeks old.

I can't believe I'm the only one experiencing this problem.

Remember. I said it wasn't constant. Just periodic. And of course always at the most inconvenient moments.

FYI: when my wife would be on her windows computer, the same sites would not be working on my laptop. But if I were to go to my desktop, it would prob be working.

Jun 11, 2014 8:27 AM in response to Event Video Guy

You didn't say whether the problem occurs on the laptops on any other network. If it doesn't, and especially if the problem hits all your devices when it occurs, then it has to be a network problem. This is probably something that you'll need to talk to your internet service provider about, if you have gotten a brand new wireless router without a change in the behavior.

I didn't think about that. But yes. It occurs when I'm at my parents house as well. And at Barnes and noble.

In that case, there are only two possibilities I can think of. The first is some kind of software or modification to your system that is causing the problem. The second is a bad DNS setting.

The easiest thing to try is Linc's suggestion above. If changing your DNS settings according to his directions doesn't help, the only other possibility left is some kind of third-party software issue, or a modification to the system. The easiest way for us to determine what software is installed on these machines would be to either download and run EtreCheck, and paste the results into a message here, or to follow Linc's directions to perform a similar task here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6360963?answerId=26079776022#26079776022

(That topic has no relation at all to yours... Linc posts those instructions frequently, and that was just the first I found. Make sure to post the results here, not on that topic.)

Either option is fine, but note that there is no need at all to do both... just one or the other. EtreCheck is easier, Linc's script doesn't require you to trust a strange app.

Here are the results:

I hope someone can make heads or tails out of this.

And please keep in mind that in the past I have completely wiped and reinstalled after reformatting and within an hour or 2 I get the same errors on the these websites.

No difference.

After being on Facebook for 5 minutes, it errored out again for about 1/2 hour.

After 1/2 hour, I was able to access it again.

Did I mention this has been a constant problem throughout every version of the OSX.

My laptop came with Leopard. Same problems occured.

Upgraded to Snow Leopard. Same problems.

All the way up till just a few weeks ago when I finally upgraded to Mavericks.

I typically do not (technically) upgrade.

I usually wipe my drive and reformat to Ungunk my system and install the new OS from scratch from a bootable thumbdrive.

I'm surprised that I'm the only one experiencing this problem.
