Confused about Repair Status

I paid the $99 to get my iPod fixed/replaced, and Apple found accidental damage/abuse, but they're shipping the original product to me. Does this mean they're shipping the original product to me repaired, instead of a replacement? Because I've read in multiple places that Apple doesn't repair your product, just replaces it. Just curious
