Q: Mac Pro Freeze/Display glitch on start up

I've only been using my new Mac Pro (late 2013) for a few days now but am expereicing an issue on restart/start up. It seems the computer struggles to search for the two new 1920x1200 Dell displays that are hooked up to it through mini display-DVI converters.

Sometimes it only sees one display, but when it finally finds the second one (usually before the login screen,) the second display appears to look corrupted showing a grid of weird static blocks. This then makes the pinwheel appear and login screen become translucent and eventually freeze forcing me to perform a hard reset.

Usually after a few hard restarts and switching the display cables around, it eventually starts up.

I'm running 10.9.3 btw and also am plagued with the Adobe/GPU issue. Could this problem also be related to OS X?

Thanks.

I have 12 with D700 and 1 with D500.  They all exhibit the same issue.

I just wrote an email to Tim Cook regarding this issue, including a link to this discussion thread as well as outlining the problem with a picture. Hopefully he, or somebody on his team, reads it and escalates the issue.

Apple just announced OS X 10.9.5. See the following link for what is included:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6400

When I talked to the Apple senior advisor last week, he told me that Apple Engineering team wanted me to try the 10.9.5 Beta code and the 10.9.5 code when it comes out. But according to the above link, this update does not address the issues I have.

This Apple senior advisor also told me that if both 10.9.5 Beta and 10.9.5 do not address the problem, I should wait for the 10.10!

Too soon to say for sure, but 10.9.5 appears to have solved the problem.  I did several restarts as well as a full shutdown and startup and it worked every time.

That's optimistic news. I wrote Tim Cook at 3:15pm and the fix comes out two hours later. Coincidence?!?!

I can't upgrade until Avid qualifies 10.9.5 but hopefully the other people in this thread will be able to confirm that it's resolved for them as well.

Oh! The joy. 10.9.5 has the right fix.

Resolved the issue on all 13 of our nMp's.  If I knew emailing Tim Cook would work, I would have tried that myself.

I also upgraded to 10.9.5 and have been using a new active adapter for one monitor. So far so good.....

I do notice that the CPU utilization is a bit higher after the upgrade. For example, on a idle nMP, the CPU utilization would go up to around 15% with 10.9.4 when I use Chrome to browse a website. But now it is about 25% or more.

    Has anyone else noticed that?

Three days ago I start my new Mac Pro (4-core, dual D300 etc) and I notice weird flickering when I drag windows around, or when I scroll in browsers etc. It's like it's trying to refresh but have problems. Really annoying!

I have been using a DVI-Mini Display Port adapter (bought at Steren) and it has worked fine so far. But suddenly out of nowhere this just happened???

    So...

    1. I tried a DVI-HDMI adapter instead... but still the same problem.

    2. I tried to update to 10.9.5... but still the same problem.

    3. I tried to install new Wacom drivers... still the same problem.

    4. I tried to connect to other screens (from Wacom Cintiq to a cheap Samsung model)... but still the same problem.

So then I thought - maybe it is the adapter that is bad?

    5. So... I connected my MBP (late 2009) to each of the screens (with the cheap DVI-Display Port adapter mentioned above) and that... works absolutely perfect. In other words, it's the Mac Pro that has the issues, not the adapters.

    Please help.

    Best regards,

    Petter

That's a totally different issue from what we've been seeing and not a common one that I've heard. You should give AppleCare a call. They'll probably instruct you to reinstall the operating system from scratch then if that doesn't work, to take it into the Apple Store to have a "genius" hardware test it. If you haven't tried a different DVI cable plugged into the adapter yet, I'd try switching the cable out.

By any chance, did you update your system to 10.9.5 before this happened?

    Thank you erm26,

I've tried two different screens and they each have their own DVI cable, so it seems that that's not the problem.

    Thanks EdAnuff,

I just updated to 10.9.5 one hour ago. But it didn't help.

Another example of strange behaviour. Maybe it can have something to do with it.

When I render in Cinema 4D on the Mac Pro the mouse cursor lags meanwhile.

When I render in Cinema 4D on the MBP the mouse cursor behaves totally normal.

It's super irritating. Am I doing something wrong here? I bought the Mac Pro to get rid of problems, not get new ones.

Well if you've installed graphics software, perhaps you've installed a version that is not compatible with your setup and created the problem you're experiencing. You might want to just reinstall the system software from scratch to see if it's fixed. If it is, check all the system requirements online for the software you use if you haven't already. If that doesn't find the conflict, install your software packages one at a time, checking to see if your system is working after each one. If a clean system software reinstall doesn't solve your problem, then make an appointment with Apple to get your hardware tested.
