my 2.7Ghz April 2005 G5 makes the bong sound but no video and no keyboard after CPU & Coolant system overhaul, Can anyone help?

Hi!

I have an April 2005 G5. I just replaced both CPUs on my dual quad 2.7Ghz and refurbished the Liquid Cooling System. The PRAM battery has been replaced with a new one. I have done a PMU reset as well. I have the Apple Service Disc. The keyboard and mouse are plugged into different USB ports. When I power up the Mac, I get power to the mouse, but nothing to the keyboard. I get the BONG sound (year, hardware!), but no keyboard or video. The video card is fine, it just seems something else is affecting the system. Why would I get the BONG sound if something hardware related was wrong? I know I need to do the Apple Service Disc for resetting and thermal calibration. I do get the red lights on the CPU cards. But isn't that beacuse of Thermal Calibration? Are my CPU's fried? Is the BONG sound false positve? Can anyone pplease help? My business depends on this machine. God Bless.

Hi BDAqua, I hope you are still out there (and in good health). I have recently replaced the Motherboard as there was issues with corrosion damage from the LCS leak. The LCS has been overhauled and the leaks has stopped. I have assembled the computer and I get a bong with no beeps/LED flashes. Now, I have the ASD 2.5.8 on a CD-r. But, there is no power to the USB ports. Thus, I cannot use the keyboard to activate the ASD. I have checked all power connections and all is correct. Here is my questions:

Am I supposed to still try the hair dryer technique? I am not getting any error beeps or flashes. I have reset the MoBo, but I am at a loss here on what to do next. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. PLEASE HELP!

Hello,

So, it won't boot from the ASD Disc?

Did you put the CPUs back in the same position they were in before?

What kind of Thermal paste did you use?

The Macintosh startup chime is the single note or chord (depending on model type) played when an Apple Macintosh computer is turned on. The sound indicates that diagnostic tests run immediately at startup have found no hardware or fundamental software problems.

But, that may not apply once stepping further into the boot process due to a variety of factors. 😟

Are you getting any beeps or flashes on the power button after the bong?

Can you count the beeps or flashes?

1 beep = no RAM installed

2 beeps = incompatible RAM types

3 beeps = no good banks

4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)

5 beeps = processor is not usable

In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.

Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

If you're sure the RAM is good, try the Hair Dryer trick...

No power light at all...

It can show on any G5, and even many other computers & electronic devices of the period.

THANK YOU BDAqua for your response! I ONLY get the confident single BONG. I have the ASD 2.5.7 for my early 2005 computer. When I hit the Command+Option+O+F before the BONG, I do not get the Open Firmware prompt. Afterwards, when the machine sits, the fans gradually get faster and faster. The CPUs have a red LED on them. There are no startup red lights/flashes of any kind other than the power light. No warning bells, flashes or beeps. Only the single confident, "BONG!"

If I do nothing with the keyboard, the bong sounds and the DVD player starts because the ASD is in the drive.

I noticed that when I use the Opt+Com+O+F before the BONG, the CD player does not autostart, there's a bit of delay. Also, if I wait just before the BONG sound, aproximatly .5 seconds before it sounds, I can interrupt it by holding down the Open Firmware commands. I found this out by experimenting.

It seems like the hardware is fine and I even kept the machine plugged in overnight. I cannot reset the PRAM. I have even replaced the lithium camera battery inside in the right polairity.

This was a computer that leaked and was stored for a couple of years. I got a hold of it and cleaned it all out. A new power supply and new O-Rings for the LCS. The previous owner said it still booted before I took it apart.

If the CPUs were bad, I shouldn't get the BONG sound, right? Also, I believe the CPUs are in the original order as I dissasembled it.

Where does the Open Firmware come from? Is my machine fried? PLEASE HELP!

GOD BLESS

I think April 2005 G5 needs ASD 2.5.8...

This 2.5.8 version is compatible with the following Mac models ONLY:

PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz),

PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.5/1.33GHz), PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz), PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.33GHz), PowerBook G4 (12-inch 1.5GHz),

iBook G4 (Early 2004), iBook G4 (14-inch Early 2004), eMac (USB2.0),

Power Mac G5, Power Mac G5 (June 2004 Series), Power Mac G5 (Late 2004),

Power Mac G5 (Early 2005), iMac G5, iBook G4 (12-inch Late 2004),

iBook G4 (14-inch Late 2004), Mac mini PPC (First Version), and

iMac G5 w/ALS (Ambient Light Sensor).

I'm thinking the CPUs may be good... have you reseated all cards & connectors inside... thinking corrosion.

THANK YOU AGAIN BDAqua!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have reseated all cards and connectors. The motherboard looks fine except this spot near the I/O devices in the back of the computer. I used an exacto blade tip to remove some "White Rice" off of a few resistors, capacitors and diodes. I used 41% rubbung alcohol, a cotton swab (moderratly damp) and a can of air duster to clean off the debrit. I did the same for the CPUs as well. Very exacting work, worthy of any engineer. No apparant damage. I have tried the front port as well as a precaution.

The Mouse seems to work (lights up), but the keyboard Caps Lock light is not working. I suppose that is because of the Basic Nature the computer is running at this stage. Do you know of anywhere I can get the 2.5.8 ASD? I seem to only be able to get the 2.5.7.

I am already looking for replacement motherboards for this computer as a precaution. They seem affordable. In the mean time, I apprectiate all your input! Thank you again & GOD BLESS.
