Q: Xerox printer driver permissions

Hi there, I run a Xerox 7760GX printer with Xerox driver 2.0.13v1 which is the latest. Printing is not an issue, permissions however, are messy. After a run repairing permissions which I do on a regular basis, it corrects permissions for this driver. But when printing again I get a dialog warning from the driver the permissions have to be repaired first in order to print. After the driver alters it permissions I can print again. But with repairing permissions in Disk Utility history repeats itself. It this a OS flaw or a driver flaw? TIA.

Xerox driver 2.0.13v1

OS 10.9.2

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), i7/8gb 17" AntiGlare

    Oh yes. It's /var/db/receipts now.

Great, I was poking around there already. I found a few Xerox files. First this set:

    com.apple.pkg.Xerox_Phaser.bom

    com.apple.pkg.Xerox_Phaser.plist

    com.apple.pkg.Xerox_PhaserMIF.bom

    om.apple.pkg.Xerox_PhaserMIF.plist

    com.apple.pkg.XeroxPrinterDrivers.bom

    com.apple.pkg.XeroxPrinterDrivers.plist

And then lower down this set:

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPhaser7760.iccprofileFoxtail.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPhaser7760.iccprofileFoxtail.pkg.plist

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPhaser7760.xeroxPrintingscoutFoxtail.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPhaser7760.xeroxPrintingscoutFoxtail.pkg.plist

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPhaser7760.xeroxPrintingSoftwareFoxtail.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPhaser7760.xeroxPrintingSoftwareFoxtail.pkg.plist

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.magicalpackage.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.magicalpackage.pkg.plist

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.phasermifpde105.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.phasermifpde105.pkg.plist

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.phasermifxsubinaries.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.phasermifxsubinaries.pkg.plist

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.phasermifxsucontents.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.phasermifxsucontents.pkg.plist

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.xeroxphasermifuniversaldriver.pkg.bom

    com.xerox.print.xeroxPrinter.xeroxphasermifuniversaldriver.pkg.plist

Should I trash the latter? Part of it? I mean, PrintingScout is to resolve print errors, is not a direct driver or anything.

Delete all of it. What's the worst that could happen?

The only thing that reads those files is RP. Oh, and maybe the Software Update process.

Fixed! I trashed all of 'em, then RP to see what would come up. Only the folder /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources was corrected. After that I ran a print job and no permissions dialog form the Xerox driver this time. So thanks!

Out of curiosity, was this caused by OSX or by Xerox due to a crappy installer?

Repair Permissions compares the values of file attributes stored in the .bom files (Bill of Materials) with the actual values on the disk. So it's just as possible that the bom values are wrong as the actual files.

Where the bom file data comes from, and how it relates to what the installer puts on the disk, I'm not entirely sure.

"Repair" Permissions is misnomer: "Restore" Permissions is more accurate. But if the files work, then they don't need repairing, and there are any number of possible attributes that might still allow a file to work.

I totally agree. Restore is far more acurate. Thanks again Benwiggy.
