FCS 1.5.2 on 10.6.8 can't start database server

I've inherited an installation that has stopped running after some permission issues.

System Prefs Error popup:
"There was an error communicating with the server"

Console reads:

11/06/2014 12:37:29 /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Server/Final Cut Server.bundle/Contents/MacOS/fcsvr_stored[16824] MDS Error: unable to create user DBs in /var/folders/xW/xWXl7fnvGbqW34hdBByEOE+++TI/-Caches-//mds

Helpfully System prefs quits when I attempt to Create Support Profile.

I've checked the permissions for the folder within /var/folders/xW/... and they have the same owner/group as the Admin user I am logged in as. (permission:700) I changed the permissions to 777 and recieved:

11/06/2014 13:14:43 /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Server/Final Cut Server.bundle/Contents/MacOS/fcsvr_stored[18586] MDS error: /var/folders/xW/xWXl7fnvGbqW34hdBByEOE+++TI/-Caches-//mds with bad owner/mode

Any idea what could cause dodgy permissions in the /var/Folders and what they should be in a working FCS enviroment?

---

By changing the owner:group of that specific folder to daemon:daemon (on a hunch) I can stop the Console error message... but the Database still doesn't start.

thanks
