Recording Delay?

I have problems with recording voice or instruments. Sometimes there is unexplainable delay that I can't work with. What am I doing wrong?

Does this happen only when you use specific FX plugins?

Some FX plugins will create a delay... as for example...they need to 'read ahead' in order to process the incoming signal for example...causing a delay or latency... This would explain why it only happens sometimes.. instead of all the time..

So to test.. just record without using any FX plugins and see if you can recreate the problem... If not, then you know its down to a specific FX plugin or plugins that you are using.

Often times I find it is the most obvious things get obverlooked, you probably already went over this stuff, but...

Check to make sure there ar no plug-ins on the master bus, that will always throw a stinky delay on. Also you can check your audio preferences and check your I/O buffer, and see what it says about latency there. Like Art Of Sound says, some plug ins (especially pitch correction plug-ins) will cause a latency no matter where they are in the session, even if their power button is off, I find you actually have to remove the plug-in.

Sometimes, things like record or input monitor get left on on another track and that sounds super weird too. Make sure the orange I and the red R are only on the track you're trying to record.
