Wifi is connected but can't browse the internet

Hi. I have the latest iMac with Mac OS X 10.9.2 and i have been using it for a few months now and never had any problem with it but today, even though the wifi connection is successful as usual, the browser wouldn't open anything, it just keeps on loading. Can't open the app store or drop box or the Gmail desktop notification box but skype is working as well as an app I had downloaded before from the appstore. All the other devices using the wifi are working fine, too. I can't understand what the problem is.

iMac, Other OS

Check on both to see if the firmware is up-to-date. If both prove to be then I'd recommend searching Apple's articles on troubleshooting that issue.

Also please complete your profile, without any knowledge of how your computer is configured it's difficult to say what the problem is. For example what iMac do you have and what version of OS X is installed?

What do you mean by firmware? I tried to open the "Software Update" panel to check any updates but it won't open, it shows a message saying "Cannot open the Software Updates panel", something to that effect. How can I see if it's up-to-date, then? Is there another way?

I did mention in my original post that I have the latest iMac (27", if that's important), which is also mentioned on my profile. Are there different versions of the iMac? And it has Mac OS X 10.9.2. installed. The dropdown menu in the profile settings didn't have that option.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I agree with Linc Davis' suggestion. Boot to safe mode & report back. Wi-fi WILL work in safe mode. If issue is resolved it implies that the issue is related to a third party kernel extension. Otherwise you should also test your saved network locations.

Follow the "Making new locations" section to create a new "Test" location that will have all default settings. Does Wi-fi issue persist?

Thank you so very much!! I'm so relieved. Its working fine now. I opened it in safe mode but it was still acting the same way so I created a new location for the wi-fi and it solved the problem instantly. What does this mean? What was the problem? Anyway, I have to say this community is amazing and thanks so much for helping me out everybody. :)
