My personal Ringtone keeps "falling over"

Hi,

For about 4 years my personal ringtone never wavered with my iPhone 3G.

I've now had an iPhone 4S for about 3 weeks and as far as I can work out I'm not doing anything different but at least 2 or 3 times a week my ringtone falls over and goes back to the iPhone default. For the moment I can't even say whether this happens during a sync or not. It is a bit frustrating as I'm so used to my ringtone I sometimes (even with the vibration on as well) don't realize it's my iPhone ringing!

When I go in toTones to bring the tone back to my ringtone after it has "fallen over" I click a dot in "selected tones" and a tick against "my ringtone" and then on "Apply" (bottom right) after that I return to the "iPhone Summary Page" and click on sync in the bottom right. I don't go back to tones unless there is a problem and for that matter I don't even use "iTunes" except to sync my iPhone. To sync I plug my iPhone in and the iTunes Music page comes up. I then click on My iPhone in the left hand column and the iPhone Summary Page comes up to see at what % the charge is at. The sync has been set to proceed automatically.

Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong? I would love to be able to "glue" my ringtone permanently in place!

Thanks

What a Pity, no ideas from anyone and it just fell over again !!

Last night I actually went in to "Tones" to check when I sync'ed it before going to bed and this morning I missed a call as it had reverted to the iPhone default ringtone again. I wasn't awake enough to remember to check the ringtone before putting into its belt pouch this morning, I suppose I'll have to do that all the time now?

This is driving me mad, surely there must be something that can be done? As previously said my personal ringtone never wavered in years with my old 3G and now the 4S seems to have a mind of its' own!

Hi modular 747,

Thanks for replying. ITunes says I have IOS 7.1.1 and I connect it to a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.5

It is a brand new 4S purchased from Apple with no contract to any provider.

I don't believe I'm completley ignorant as I built my first PC in 1987 and was a PC tech. for some time. I've now been on MacBooks for about 7 years.

To tell you all I don't generally use the iPhone connected to the Internet so I generally only use iCal, Address Book and the Telephone part of it. I'm retired and I prefer picking up my emails and navigating the Internet on my MacBook. On rare occasions I'll connect to find my way in a city and on even rarer occasions, pick up emails but that is about all.

As for the problem I can't understand what is going on at all. As said my old 3G which stopped working (it lost the telephone network) worked for years with my ringtone and now the 4S seems to have a mind of its' own and keeps wiping it! I know this sounds crazy but that is what seems to be happening.

Your posts still don't provide much specific information.

1. When the phone reverts to the default ringtone (I assume that's what you mean by "falls over"), does your custom ringtone always no longer appear in the ringtone list on the phone? Do you have to sync with iTunes to get it back on your phone each time this happens?

3. Please clarify: "I can't even say whether this happens during a sync or not." The rest of your posts states you have to sync the phone to restore the custom ringtone, and that syncing is how you fix it, not cause it. Do you sync with more than one computer?

3. Please clarify: "this morning I missed a call as it had reverted to the iPhone default ringtone again." Does that mean the default ringtone is inaudible?

4. As previously asked: What basic iPhone troubleshooting steps (i.e. restart, reset, restore, as described in the User Guide) have you already tried?

Hi Modular 747,

Yes "Falling over" for me means that the iPhone has lost my custom tone and uses the default tone (a sort of musical click click) and though I might vaguely hear it, it doesn't really capture my attention, for example in a noisy street, as it isn't my ringtone, the one I've used for years and years.

I have previously switched the iPhone off for about 3 minutes and then back on, hoping for a sort of reset.

I haven't looked at the iPhone when the iPhone default tone rings, I've just plugged it into my MacBook, gone to Tones in iTunes then ticked the now unticked box of my custom ringtone, clicked on Apply in the bottom right hand corner. After that back to the summary page and sync. Next time (and hopefully there won't be one!) I will go back in and check what the diffierent tones are in "Sounds".

This morning (the last time I "lost" my custom ringtone) after going through the procedure above and when checking that my custom ringtone was listed in the iPhone I also noted that the "Text Tone" and "New Voicemail" were also back at default. I haven't noticed this before as I don't use the iPhone as much now that I'm retired.

You are quite right I will have to check all this much more diligently and make notes in order to get to the bottom of the problem. At first I thought it was something that I hadn't done correctly. The iPhone 4S is a far more complicated piece of equipment than my old 3G.

Thanks for trying to help and I will be back (with details!) if it happens again but... fingers crossed, since this morning my custom ringtone is still in place. For the moment I've now noted everything in the Sounds "page" on the iPhone to be able to compare it if it reverts to the defaults again.

If "this morning" sounds strange to you, I live in France. We may be at opposite ends of this World?

Thanks again, Garoolgan

Hi all,

This problem is recurring but so seldom that I've generally put it out of my mind by the time it happens again and of course I still have no idea why this happens ! To repeat, my old iPhone 3G went for years and years (5?) without any problem with my personal ring-tone.

I have noted that my personal ring-tone isn't listed in my iPhone when the iPhone 4S goes back to the default ring-tone.

This is a maddening, small, but harassing problem. I "wear" my iPhone on my belt in a horizontal thick craftsman built leather pouch which dampens the ring-tone and the vibrations quite a bit so when it reverts to the default "ding-ding" it is hardly audible and even though I'm now retired I do prefer replying to a call !

On following up the complaints of others with a similar/same problem I've understood that if a contact (or all contacts?) is/are attributed my personal ring-tone, my personal ring-tone is then locked = ?? I've now added my personal ring-tone to the first contact on my iPhone 4S but can anyone confirm that this is a sloution?

As usual any suggestions gratefully received !

Hello,

Something has just happened which I don't understand at all but I am writing it up in case someone else does!

A few days ago whilst buying a "lightning cable" for my daughter at an "iReparo" store I mentioned the very occasional problem I was having with my personal ring-tone on my iPhone 4S going AWOL.

The salesgirl had a quick look at my iPhone and didn't find anything wrong B U T ... wait for it !!!

The next time I synced my iPhone, on the main page of iTunes I found "Tones" in the left hand column below "Music" (there had been nothing there before) A N D in the details of the iPhone there was nothing in the "Tones tab". That page is sort of "greyed-out" now. Previously in the main part of the "Tones tab" page under the "All Tones and Selected Tones" greyish rectangle there was a square followed by the name of my personal ring tone. When my personal ring-tone went AWOL I'd click on this square thereby adding a tick in it and then synch the iPhone. This action brought the personal ring-tone back for a very variable x no. of days.

This new "Tones" in the left hand column of iTunes is not even a week old so I can only hope that it will resolve the problem of my personal ring-tone occasionally going AWOL.

Does anyone know what either the salesgirl or I or ?? did on my iPhone in order to make this "Tone" in the left hand column of "iTunes" appear?... or is it an automatic update... or ...??

Please don't panic ⚠ If no-one knows I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, I've now arrived at an age when I'm quite satisfied if things simply work but I'm still a bit curious, a hangover from my "techie" days I suppose?!

Thanks for reading

Bob
