When I try to open iphoto it won't complete opening so I have to force quit —'iphoto not responding' Do I need to reinstall? Ugrade(?) if so do I need to back up all my existing files first? trash current iphoto application?
I am running 06 10.6.8

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

yes - backup - you should always have a godo backup because if you do not it is only a matter of time until you lose everything - and it is expecially important when you are upgrading or fixing problems

Hi thank you. I tried it and a new blank iphoto appeared. i was able to import 3 photos so far from another library. Now what?

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database from the last automatic backup

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
