This support document provides explanation of update/restore error codes, http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 however does not address syncing errors. I don't find an error 54 dealing with syncing. When does this error occur? What part of the sync process?
The error appears each time I connect by iPhone to iTunes. It begins to transfer podcast, etc and then the error appears. This happened with my iPhone 4S and I just upgraded to the 5, it still pops up. I am guessing this error is in iTunes, not my phone.
Yes, this is an iTunes error. I've checked the support page and cannot find a listing for sync errors. Is everything working fine when syncing everything else? Is it just the Podcasts that are generating the error? If so, we can search for that. Otherwise, you may need to take additional steps.

I cannot find anything about podcast syncing errors in support. You might want to try another search, or think about removing and reinstalling iTunes. That will not affect your library, but is time consuming in Windows. See this support document and make sure that you follow the steps exactly. Unfortunately this did not fix the error message either (-54). I followed the directions, removed and re installed iTunes. I may have to give up on Podcast, I cannot think of any other solutions to this problem.
Anything is possible. However, if you live close to an Apple store, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and see if they can help you correct this situation.
