Do you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or have you unchecked that preference (strongly not recommended) giving you a referenced library?

What format is the external drive?

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window rebuild thumbnails

And

What format is the external drive?

and is it on a wired connection to your Mac (USB or Thunderbolt or Firewire ?)

Also note that the Time Machine backup and your iPhoto library can not share the same drive - it will not work and even if it did you would not have a backup since when the drive failes (which it will) you lose both the library and the backup at the same instant

You do have a managed library - that is good and important - do not uncheck that option to copy imports

Also I question your options to use RAW and to save edits as 16bit TIFF - they are valid options but make major increases in disk store requirements for little or no improvments for most people - only if you have unusual and very specific needs for these you may not whan them checked

The format question, well I needed Genius Bar help a while back with iphoto and I dint have enough HD space so they told me to buy the WD air. They set it up and told me what to do when i got home in order to tranfer all my 49k pict into the new ext HD. Worked great for 4 months. still have 700+ gb available. Dont know if it was formatted correctly....

Yes its USB connected.

BTW I cant even view a snapNdrag pict thru preview now!

Going to try and point my Time Machine to my own internal HD. is that good?

or should I use another external HD.

I have an extra 2 ... one with (58G available out of 60 via FWire) & (one with 225G avail out of 320G via usb)

Time M is running smooth got 3 hours to go . But if I am going to need another xHD for any reason then I rather skip time mach... I am ready for some help please..... User uploaded file

To make matters worse, I dont even see Photos under Library, which where at 50K.

Now all I see without many thumnail but still here.... is under Albums/ Recovered photos. Thats what the Genius Bar saved x months ago!

BTW the endless beachball is back, maybe Time mach... its an oldie but goody imac 2.16 core 2 duo...

Do we jump into Iphoto Library manager? turn FileVault off? trash Iphoto data files like the original post I placed?

glo1man,

I don't know how to help you with this, since I do not know enough about the particular drive you are using. I do not own a WD My passport air. The only thing I know about them, is, thtat there are known issues, when using them with Mavericks and using the WD software that comes with the drives (http://wd-mavericks-data-loss.com/#).

If you cannot thell us, how the drive is formatted, and if a western digital drive manager is installed on that drive, take it back to the Genius who set it up for you.

It is clear from your screenshot, that your iPhoto library is badly damaged. The thumbnails have lost the connection to their original image files, and most of the image versions have been migrated to the "recovered" album. Your library needs rebuilding - a clear case for iPhoto Library Manager- but I am unsure how to do this on drive we cannot trust. I'll wait for LarryHN's recommendation in this case.

I ahve no idea beyond Léonie's - since you need a second external drive (one for TM and one for your iPHoto library and other data I suggest looking at Other World Computing - their drives are fully Mac compatible and they have great suypport - it may be as simple as the WD drive software but I to do not have a WD drive - I have either Apple or OWC
