Closing Lid Does Not Sleep MBP

I have a 15" Macbook Pro. And just in the last week. when i shut the lid, there is absolutely no affect on the computer, it doesn't even attempt to sleep.

And I've not and never have had any of those programs that stop your laptop from sleeping.

The first time I realised was when i picked up an absolutely scorching hot macbook from my laptop bag, after a 1hr and a bit drive to uni.

I have repeated numerous times, restarted and then tried having no applications open, but it refuses to sleep.

I should also point out that it sleeps properly when i select it from the menu

Regards

Takumi

!!EDIT: i should add it isn't the same symptoms as other cases of it sleeping the waking ans sleeping. it just doesn't sleep at all

It is not a good idea to put your machine to sleep when traveling. Shut it down if you are going to travel any distance beyond the same room. The shaking and jarring motion could in theory damage the hard drive. I damaged three hard drives this way on bus rides that had many potholes. Now if the lid is not letting the machine sleep when no other programs are running, it sounds like you have a problem with the latch which needs to be looked at by AppleCare.

I have also been having this problem.

When I first startup, closing the lid will properly sleep my MBP. However, after some use, closing the lid does not cause it to sleep. It doesn't even try.

When I open the lid again, it appears it's been awake the whole time--I'm still connected to my wireless router, and there isn't any application or OS lag time I've come to associate with waking.

I noticed this problem only after an upgrade to 10.4.8.

I'm with you: ever since 10.4.8 my MBP doesn't sleep. Closing the lid seems to simply turn off the backlight and the computer continues to operate.

Here's a question for everybody: what happens to your display after you close the lid? Does the display actually turn off, or does just the backlight turn off? After I close the lid, my backlight turns off; I know the display continues to operate because when I open the lid, if I look closely at the screen before the backlight comes on, I can dimly see my Mac OS desktop.

Same problem here. I couldn't understand why my MBP was so warm every time I took it out of the bag and I couldn't understand why the screen was turning blue every time I woke it up.

It apparently thinks that closing the lid means attaching a monitor, but that has never been the case. Which sane person would not use this gorgeous screen even if a second monitor was attached!

And don't come with "that is not a good idea". I have managed all my Mac portables like that for the past 6 years and that has never had an adverse effect on any of them and this behaviour has never been this way before.
