I received a PDF attachment in my hotmail acct. I clicked on the file and got a message that it is downloading then the little circle showing download progress disappeared but I cannot find the document? I looked in pages, iBooks, notes to no avail...pls help!

The PDF will have downloaded inside the Mail App. You should be able to tap and hold the File icon in the email to get the Open In option so you can save it in any App you want that can read the file. i.e iBooks or Adobe Reader for instance.
if you downloaded it, and only looked at it in the mail app - and did not do the 'open in' step noted above, then it is only in the mail app, and if you have deleted that e mail, you also deleted the pdf.
Its a good idea to 'open in' attachments you recieve if you intend to retain them.
