Q: airport extreme remote access

I am looking for some help here.  I am changing my home network around and looking for some help.

I currently have an Apple Airport Extreme 5th Gen router wired to my Cox cable internet in my upstairs den.  I have a few devices wired to the router with ethernet.  I also have a 6cat from the Extreme that runs to my landing upstairs to a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router to provide better wifi downstairs. Here I have 2 NAS drives plugged into the Netgear with ethernet.

I am planning on now running cat6 cable from the Netgear downstairs into a closet.  In the closet looking to add a 16 port switch or something.  I am planning on moving my NAS drives in to the closet also.  I would hook them and few other devices downstairs to the 16 port switch.  Not sure what switch to buy yet also.

However I would like to now be able to access my network from away from home.  I am guessing need to setup the Airport Extreme for this since it's first in the loop.  I am looking for a guide/help how to do this.

I have a few web based apps running on these NAS drives that I would like to access from work or on the road etc.

Any ideas/help?

Typically when the goal is to access a NAS remotely, you would need to open ports on the Internet router for the specific services on the NAS that you want to access.

Please check out the following AirPort User Tip on how to configure an AirPort base station for port mapping. Which ports you would need to open would depend on the service that needs to be accessed.

The key to success here is that only the routers that have NAT enabled require configuration for port mapping. If, for example, your Netgear has been reconfigured as a bridge, this won't be necessary for that router.
