System restore - lose app data?

Hello,

I need to do a system restore on my mother's iPad Air. She is an avid player of certain games on Facebook. I'm wondering if her data, i.e. FB Slotomania bank roll, will be deleted....? I'm thinking no, but would just like to confirm. Thanks!!

Dropped iPad/cracked screen is a much more serious problem than game points...take it to an Apple store genius bar and thy will offer you an out of warranty replacement. Damage is not covered by he Apple warranty. Price of the replacement depends on the model you have.

The replacement is usually a refurbished unit, but you cannot tell it fro new. Apple replaces the battery, case, repairs any faults and fully tests it. Then it gets a warranty of 90 days or what is left of your warranty, whichever is greater.

Thanks for the help Ralph. I need to do a system restore and reset to factory settings. When I purchased the iPad for her, I used my Apple ID etc becasue she didn't really understand how to use anything. Now, we'd both like her to have her own account. I read that restoring to factory settings will be like opening a newly purchased iPad and she can create an account.

Funnily enough, she is only concerned about losing her Facebook Slotomania coin balance. She does not care about having to re-purchase other apps. :-)

I just want to make sure when doing this, she doesn't lose that FB game data. Thanks again!

Ok, it wasn't clear exactly what you want to do...if you do a restore to factory condition, Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, you will lose all data and be back at an out-of-the-box iPad. You can then setup as new with her own account.

There is no way to set the iPad as hers, that is her own Apple ID, and still retain the ability for her to use the tokens tied to your Apple ID. Apps and associated data cannot be transferred between Apple IDs.

You can leave the iPad as is, and just reset the Apple ID and create a new iID for her. She can continue to use the apps, just not update them or get more coins if those are tied to the Apple ID.

You are in the position of switching Apple IDs and losing FULL functionality of the apps, and she starts over, or keep the old Apple ID and be tied to you.

A lot of users run into this kind of problem when trying to setup and help someone only to find they are now locked in and cannot transfer material.

Wow! Thanks for this!! I would prefer to have her own account, not tied to my Apple ID at all. The Facebook app is associated with her own Facebook account.

So, I was thinking that even though the app was deleted from the iPad, she would still be able retain her game data, as this restore would be the same as installing the Facebook app for the first time on a newly purchased iPad...?

I didn't think the Facebook tokens would be associated with my Apple ID, as it's a Facebook game...this is not correct, though?

Cap, you may be right on that, if the FaceBook account and all associated content are associated with her and NOT your Apple ID then she will be ok with you switching the Apple IDs.

Is the iPad she has one that came with FaceBook installed or did you install FaceBookusing yourq Apple ID? If the FaceBook app came preinstalled then she owns it and the coins...as I understand how FB works.

You can do a simple test, go to Settings > FaceBook and check how the account and password are entered. Check the Settings for FB and see if there is any tie to you.

If not, go to Settings > iCloud and Delete Account so there is not the tie there to you. Create an Apple ID and password and email address for your mother, then enter that account for her. Go to the Stores > Apple ID > Sign Out, back up and change the Apple ID to the new one you created for your mother, then move forward and Sign in...you will have to enter the new password.

Now you can test and see if she can successfully play her game.

If so, in Settings go down each app and see if any are tied to your ID and if so, change them.

That way you have not done a bulk erase of settings and content but should make the iPad hers.

Ok, Ralph. I will do as you suggest. The FB app was not pre-installed. I installed it when first setting up her iPad. I don't remember if I needed my Apple ID to set that up for her. I will have to check.

One other thing. The slot game she plays on Facebook is not shown in the Game Center on my iPad. Other games we both share and play like Scrabble, are shown in the Game Center. The Game Center on her iPad and mine are the same name, so those apps and data will most likely be the ones affected when I create the new Apple ID. Here's hoping Facebook is not one of them!!

Thank you SO much!! You're very knowledgable! I really appreciate you taking the time to help me with this. P.S. Would you believe I dropped my iPad earlier and cracked the screen?! Two iPad issues to deal with on the same day!! Great! ;-)

Thanks Ralph. Most definitely a more serious problem, then losing fake money! I have the Air. I can get the screen replaced for around $100 locally, from a non-Apple company. Normally, I'd be wary of doing this, but a friend recently had his repaired by this company. He was very satisfied with the repair and was given a 90 day warranty. There doesn't seem to be any issues with mine in terms of functionality. The battery charges and holds the charge. I read Apple's cost for screen repair is $300. To purchase a new one costs $500, so it seems like a lot of money to possibly end up getting a used one, right?

I definitely understand the cost concerns, but will only add the caveat that having the screen replaced by an unauthorized repair service terminates all support for tht iPad fom Apple. If the service does not do things right, Apple will not do a replacement.

As a fellow user and not an Apple employee I have no stake in that decision, just a warning.

But when you have a repair witha good track record it is certainly hard to not save the money.

If the screen is cracked it would be wise to get it fixed before it stops working...and very important to make a complete backup of everything while you can. A lot of people come here almost daily with the problem of, how do I get my photos, etc., back now that my device will not work at all.

Ok, thanks Ralph. What you're saying makes sense, and although there is cost savings getting it fixed elsewhere going to Apple seems to be the better play. Do you think if I bring my mother's iPad, they could me help with making the Apple ID change? I'm quite nervous about making the change in fear of losing her data, so having Apple help with that would be great!

Yes, they can help with the Apple ID issue...go to Apple Retail Store link at the bottom of this page, then Genius Bar upper right of the page that opens, then Make a Reservation top center of that page that opens. They get really busy and it is better to make an appointment than to stand around waiting for someone to get free to help you...and you have a record of the visit should there be a future problem :-)
