All you need is iDVD.

Which iMovie did you use to create the movie? If you used the newest update in Mavericks, it won't export directly to iDVD. You have to export the movie to a folder, then import it into iDVD.

The older version that is in the iMovie folder in Applications will export to iDVD, but I don't know if it will export to the '09 version.

Why not iLife '11?

Just do a custom install of iDVD.

From iMovie 10 export the movie at 480p. Put the movie file in your Movies folder. When you open iDVD and select your theme drag the movie into the main theme window being careful to avoid any dropzones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Also make sure you have a minimum of 20-15GB of free space on your boot drive. iDVD needs lots of temporary free space for encoding and burning.

Installed idvd....do not have anything that says export so used share.....put it in the movie folder...all looks good...

Does not appear later....does not go to desk top...just disappears...imovie had it as 2g and when it came thru it was

Very small....seems like I have a different system....should I have also loaded on imovie as well as idvd ?.

Sorry to be so lame....got this Mac after PCs were so crazy and looks like Apple might be following suit.

Have worked for hours and gotten no where. thanks

Yes, there is no longer an export option, but share works: choose "File" in the share window. Next, choose the size (depending on the size of your footage, choose 720p or 1080p; all other choices are really small and meant for the internet) and after that, choose desktop. When it's finished, you should have the file on your desktop. You can then open iDVD, choose a theme, customize it, and then drag the movie into your project.

You can try to use a previous version of iMovie, but you would probably have to uninstall the latest version first. Then install the older iMovie and reinstall the latest version - that's what I have: both versions. But my older one was already installed when I installed the new one, so I'm not sure it'll work.

Getting back to you with good news:

Was uploading to the desk top when the evening ended.

Appears that it took a long time to load and save to the desk top. One file in the AM had "dproj" on it and only had 63 Kbs. Another folder saved to the desktop had the full amount 2 gb and was an mp4 folder.

The project folder did not load. The mp 4 tried. At first. Nothing happened and I was given an error message.

"Errors during the the project validation must be fixed". This happened a few times and I was about to give up

When it asked if I wanted to still burn. I think that this worked as a fluke. Not sure that I can do it again.

Will try another day. Was able to burn the DVD and several copies. It came out fine except for the theme part.

Just picked the first one and it is now part of my movie . Did not deal with the theme before. What are you

Supposed to do with that ?? I appreciate all of your help along with everyone else.

Will do this again (not now ) so I can write the directions down. I do not remember this taking so long to load

With the last operating system. Have a good weekend.

Ok, it's not really just "loading" - it is rendering and encoding the movie which will take a while. Not sure what happened with your workflow/results as I've never had that kind of error message. You should just have iMovie open and export your movie to the desktop (best to do nothing else while that is happening as encoding and rendering takes a lot of processor power - I just walk away and don't let it sleep until it's done).

As for the mp4 - I noticed that when I first tried the new iMovie and it gave me some problems as well (iDVD did not like it); I like the older iMovie version which resulted in an mpeg2 (.mov) which was much easier to deal with. If you have the older version, you might want to consider using it (I am).

As for iDVD: you can choose to do a "Magic DVD" where it's all automated for you, or....

regarding the theme which is what will play as soon as you insert the DVD into the DVD player - here's how to make the best use out of it: choose one and you can customize it (change the background, add your own pics/short video clips to the menu to make it look cool, add your own music (generally a 30 second audio clip), and you can have more than one movie or chapters showing on the menu with all clickable buttons (which you can customize) so it'll all look very slick and as though it was made by a pro. So, for that, I'd suggest you make a 30 second test movie, open a new iDVD project, and simply start playing around with all the choices until you figure out what you like (and how to do it).
