Mail settings on iPhone keeps looking for Gmail iMap server

Are there hidden settings or caches I can clear?

Hubby has iPhone 4

Suddenly he no longer can access his GMAIL on the iPhone- worked perfectly until some time last wee. And hubby has not done anything with or to his phone, ho downloads etc.

When retrieving mail he now constantly gets an error message the phone cannot connect to the Imap.Gmail server.

Hubby has a Pop. mail account with GMAIL, not an iMap account.

We went online to GMail via the web and clearly his account is pop and his gmail should port over to his default email account.

Is this an iPhone issue,? an iOS issue?a Gmail issue?

All ideas are welcome

Hello, Barbara.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I would start with closing all open applications as outlined in the first article and power cycle the device. If the issue persists, the easiest way to troubleshoot this issue would be to delete the account and add it back to the iOS device. Below, I have included two additional email troubleshooting articles. The second article covers basic email troubleshooting. The third article usually resolves the issue when experiencing this on a Gmail account.

iOS: Force an app to close

iOS: Gmail account will not connect to Gmail server

Power cycle? Not sure I know how that term applies to an IOS device.

Thank you for your valuable resources.

My husband did not set it up. He teaches at a school which has its own gmail domain and teachers, students all get gmail accounts. My hubby could access his email via website but like anyone else , wants to access on his computer and iPhone.

The email , hubby just told me also no longer comes to his computer or his iPhone.Which makes me wonder if someone at his institution changed the Gmail to iMap? It had been POP.

Could that be the source of the mischief.?

On the web I looked at hubby's gmail account and it is properly set to forward to a POP account. But maybe if the whole shebang was changed to iMap that woud explain non receipt?

I really do not like any of the :"G" things other than the search function (am being polite here 🙂)

But the rest of the world still has not caught onto Apple products so , sigh, we have to cope with these folk, especially when that includes the employer.

Please let me know if a server side change to Imap would interrupt the receipt of my mail which we have entered in as a POP account.

Thank you
