Q: MacBookPro5,1 + Install Mac 10.9.3 = restart loop (safe boot only)

Tried installing 10.9.3 from 10.6.8 on my MacBookPro5,1 on 2014/06/03; it goes into a startup loop since then and only starts in Safe mode. I am thankful that Mavericks' Safe mode allows internet browsing; but I have searched in vain so far for a solution.

Things I have tried with no succes so far:

  • Reinstall 10.9.3
  • Reset power manager/SMC
  • Zap NVRAM
  • Puzzled over error logs
  • Logged into recovery mode, repaired disk and permissions
  • Made bootable installer on external drive
  • Install (clean?) 10.9.3 on 900GB partition of external drive, will only start in safe mode from that installation
  • Run Apple Hardware Test from original install disk 2, got an error
  • Confirmed that AHT error (battery thermal sensor?) was from replacement battery by running test with original battery. Tried but failed to startup with original battery. Internet sources indicate error no real problem.
  • Replaced  8GB memory upgrade (from OWC) with original 4GB stock memory, still only starts in safe mode

Before initially installing Mavericks from Snow Leopard, I:

  • Made a Time Machine backup on an external drive
  • Verified disk with Disk Utility
  • Repaired permissions with DU
  • Ran TechTool Pro 6 - Did not run detailed sector check, passed all other tests including SMART, video, RAM, etc.
  • Backed up projects, archives, and such on external hard drive, now wish I had done the disk clone option too.

I am hopeful for a solution to stay with Mavericks rather than rewind back to Snow Leopard...

Currently running off the clean(?) install on the external hard drive, here is the error message to Apple:

Based on all the things you've done and your panic log, you have a hardware fault.

Have you tried starting without the MyBook attached? Anything else connected that I missed?

If you get the same without the peripherals attached, my guess would be a GPU fault based on the backtrace, but an Apple Store or Service Center would be the place to determine that.

Only an Apple "wind tunnel" keyboard/mouse. I thought I could troubleshoot a clean install on the external drive easier than from the internal hard drive. I will include error code and EtraCheck report from the internal drive in a some hours after I finish downloading another Install Mavericks app.

The first two I downloaded differed in size by a few bits, I wonder if a corrupted download is my problem.

Didn't think it was my GPU, the 5,1 model didn't have the graphics problems a slightly later model did.

    Thanks for your reply!

From you panic log, you have no third-party extensions installed.

However, it looks like you have some Launch Daemon installed (didn't load in safe mode): amsdstat.plist

I don't know what that is, but it should be in your /Library/LaunchDaemons/ folder. Move it out and  try restarting.

As for the ucupdate, I'm not sure what that does. It apparently loads something that translates machine instructions. Since it has failed, maybe there is something to that.

Can you check for two things:

    /usr/libexec/ucupdate

    /usr/share/ucupdate/microcode.dat

Also, open up Console and search All Messages for ucupdate and see if there are any errors there.

    Good thought Barney!

Here is what search for ucupdate in all console messages shows:

I wonder if com.apple.ucupdate.plist is locked?

Thanks for this suggestion, gives me more info to look up.

I can tell this 5,1 really wants to run Mavericks, even running in Mavericks Safe Mode is giving longer battery life already...

That's an interesting log. I don't know why TextEdit would be trying to open and write to that plist.

It might have been me trying to open the file to examine it...

    Still no solutions for me.

Did TextEdit crash when you tried to open it?

It may be that the plist is corrupted and that is why it doesn't load correctly.

In the interim, I've installed TextWrangler and com.apple.ucupdate.plist had the TextWrangler icon associated with it and openned normally.

    Console search show this:

    6/13/14 11:56:50.441 PM com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.ucupdate.plist[33]) Exited with code: 1

    6/13/14 11:59:21.862 PM com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.ucupdate.plist[33]) Exited with code: 1

Wonder what the code: 1 is?

In unix, anything other than 0 usually indicates failure. However, that is not an absolute.

I don't know if we're even looking in the right place, though.

I was going to toss in the towel and rewind to 10.6.8, however, my MacBookPro5,1 will not boot from a retail 10.6 DVD nor the 10.5.5 DVD that came with the laptop originally. They both gave the frozen screen multilingual "Turn off your machine with the power key" message. No fair!

Even tried using Disk Utility to make a copy of the 10.6.8 disk onto a 200GB firewire drive, wouldn't boot from that either.

Any ideas how I can return to the past with this machine?

    Thanks!

If that is the case, i would say it is a hardware problem.

I may be able to use a friend's computer to install Snow Leopard on an external drive. If so, and it boots up my laptop, I'll try cloning it to the internal hard drive.

Barring that being successful, I have to resurrect my wind tunnel tower and see if it will work for me long enough to get the laptop into the shop. I do need my online access at this time. Safe mode gets me online but is no fun. (I've got some NetFlix I need to catch up on!)

I'm feeling very regretful about the Mavericks upgrade that has made this computer barely usable; I was just waiting to upgrade hardware until new laptops or Retina iMacs to come out. Where is that irony emoticon anyway...?

    Thanks for your help Barney!
