Motorola RAZR V3 Problems.

I wonder if someone can please advise me. I recently upgraded my Sony Erricson T610 (which I liked very much) to a piece of crap Motoral RAZR V3. This new RAZR's Phonebook is so counter intuitive it's not even funny. First off, doesn't work with my OSX 10.3.9. I think I have to upgrade to 10.4 first. (no problem, I can do that) Second of all, the only way I could transfer my contacts to my new phone was to copy contacts to my SIM card. (big mistake) This new RAZR lists hundreds or contacts loosely, duplicated names for each phone entry. Anderson mobile, Anderson, Home, Anderson Work etc. Ridiculous. This is the best part, I figured out a way to consolodate the contacts, however, you have to copy to Phone Memory first. Great, you are thinking. No, It then duplicated all my entries, both SIM and Phone Memory. Now this is the best part, in order to delete my SIM contacts, you have to do one at a time.

I apologize for being too lenghty here, but I need some help. First, maybe someone can offer solutions to my dilemna. I am thinking of returning this phone back and getting something else.

Any suggestions on a good intuitive Bluetooth phone for T-Mobile service that will work well with iSync?

Also, when I upgrade to Tiger. Will iSync allow me to clear my SIM card completely so I can manager my contactes better? When I transfer my address book info to the RAZR, will it retain it's structure and be consolidated?

Thank you all for any suggestions or advise.

Ok, some of what you encountered isn't a problem with the phone, just the way things work.

Your sim card can only hold one name and one number per entry, where as the phone memory can hold multiple contact details. When you copied your details over to the sim card the phone (the Sony) renamed your contact to match the number that it belonged to, thus john mobile, john home. If it didn't do this then it would overwrite johns mobile number with him home number etc etc.

When you copied the contacts to your phone memory on the Razr, that's what you did copied, not moved. So you ended up with duplicates.

My advice is to do the following.
Wipe the Razr memory. you can do this by selecting the "select Multiple to" and then "delete" in the phonebook menu. You should be able to delete the sim contacts like this as well. If you cant then swap the sim to the Sony and that does (well the Sony phones did, I assume its still there)

So we have got your Razr blank again.

The Sony T610 should have Bluetooth, and so should the Razr. There may be some way to copy all your contacts across to the Razr from the Sony using Bluetooth.

If not, sync the Sony using iSync and then sync your Razr.

this should work.

In the future though, do not blame the technology that you are using for the outputs that you are not happy with, when you asked the technology to do it any way (copy is copy etc etc.)

I have the Razr V3x and find it comfortable to use with most items available and intuitive.

Neil,

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. Even though I was a bit frusterated, it does make some sense. I never had the issue with my T610 because I never had cause to keep my contacts on my SIM card. However, I did re-install my SIM card (Full of Contacts) back to my old phone, and it didn't show both my SIM contacts and Phone Memory contacts simultaneously. It only displayed my Phone Memory Contacts.

I have not updated to OS X 10.4 yet. Do you know if my iSync will work smoothly with the RAZR V3 phone? Address Book and Calendar? If not, can you recommend any other T-Mobile capable phone that will do the trick?

Thanks again for your response.

Ohhh now were onto Sony Ericsson Phones!
I love the Sony Ericsson phones, but the one thing that bugs me about them is the fact that your phonebook is always on your phone, not your sim card! You should have heard the ear bashing that I got when my Mrs' Sony Ericsson broke down and I told her to just take the sim card out and put it in her old phone. It worked, but "Where are all my contacts!".

As far as I can remember, to access the numbers on the sim card, you have to go to 'call number on sim' or some other option. this will let you access the numbers. Even though you cant readily access the sim, there should be an option of deleting all the sim card entries.

If I am mistaken (which happens every now and again!) if you put your sim back in the Razr, now when you press the # or * key it will change category (you can set them up for friends, businesses, VIP etc etc. but should split your sim entries and your phone entries) you can then use the "Select Multiple to..." "Delete" and blanket delete all those in your sim contacts category.

Mmmm now about iSync.
The only problem I had was that it swapped around the last and first name (but that may be because I view them Last name and first name). What I actually did was:
1: did the initial sync so my contacts came over to the Mac
2: went through the contacts in 'Address book' making any amendments, classing businesses as businesses, putting in birthdays (which don't carry over)
3: Deleted all the entries on my Razr
4: Synced (so all the contacts appeared back on my phone.

Now your address book becomes your main point of contact for any entries and your phone secondary (any numbers that you put on your phone will appear in the address book, and vice versa, but you may have to swap the names around and resync.

with the calendar. Seems ok so far.

Unfortunately cant use the Call from phone or send text options in address book. Apparently iSync needs updating to handle newer phones!

As I have only done it once, I'm not an authority, but it worked for me.

RE any other phones out there? don't know. (am unsure where you are as T-Mobile are almost everywhere and I know that available phones differ from country to country) The new Sony Erikssons are nice (with the 3 mega pixel camera)

Neil, you seem quite informed on the features of the RAZR so as a Newbie, I'll ask for your input on how it's Phonebook works.

I've got a brand new RAZR V3i, likewise a transition from my Sony Ericsson T637 (great phone, I might add but old for me). Instead of pursuing the method Mr. Anderson chose, I simply went straight through iSync to upload my contacts list to the RAZR. I've created a specific Group in Address Book for the phone's contacts and this has been a general success on the T637 using iSync.

But what a disappointment to see a very ragged result on the RAZR! Note, I've done little to change the RAZR's default settings. The first area of concern is the separation of each contact's phone number as an entry (as stated by Mr. Anderson above). This seems to add to the length and search time for a single contact's information. The next even bigger area of concern for me is that none of a contact's other relevant information (address, city, etc.) has synched. Minor issues include sorting by Last Name instead of just First, the inability to assign picture IDs w/ memory card images instead of SIM card images (save space), and Primary selection for each contact done on an individual basis (instead of general option, eg - Home phone).

In short, it is a very incomplete and impractical contact list provided by the RAZR, especially in comparison to the Sony E phones. Unless I'm missing something in the setup since I am new to the Motorola phone.

TIA!

I really couldn't agree with you more. But we have to live with what we have got!

The first thing that comes to mind is that you have synced your entries to your sim memory as opposed to your phone memory. This will give you different entries for the same person.

In regards to the lack of other data coming across: Yes. Its a bummer!
But without a common phonebook structure that all mobile phones use, and software to read it there is always going to be issues!

The only other option is to load the Mobile PhoneTools from Motorola through CrossOver (as it's only available for Windows… Double Bummer) Even though I am not sure that it's compatible with Address Book!

Apple should really pull their finger out and update the support for new phones. But I can guarantee that they are waiting till Leopard comes out to give people another reason to shell out!

Hi there,

I just got a new RAZR V3 (actually V3r isync says?) and while the syncing is working, I'm getting my contacts from my address book split into multiple contacts on my RAZR - a new entry for each phone number (mobile, work, etc.) as well as a new entry for email address. I've tried resetting the device but that didn't work. All of the contacts are getting stored in the phone memory as well, not the SIM card, so that's not the issue either. Any idea how (or if it's possible) to have the contact kept as one entry with mulitple numbers/email?

Thanks for your help.
