iTunes 7 - Selection of audiobooks

Hi!

I just downloaded iTunes 7 and wonder about the new section "audiobooks" (or similar, my iTunes is German...):

I got a couple of books, some from Audible, some ripped from CDs. All've got the file type and extension "m4b", the genre "spoken content or audiobook" and work well on my iPod mini (catagorized as audio books, last position saved etc.).

Nevertheless, not all book are located in the new section and I can't figure out why. Does anybody know which criterias have to be met by a file, so it will be shown in iTunes 7 as an audio book?

Any hint appreciated, Matthias

These are mp3 I ripped from CD.
MP3 files will not go under the Audiobook tab.
The file has to be an .m4b.

It has to be and imported/converted to AAC (.m4a) and the file type needs to be .m4b.
On a Mac, you have to change the file type (ala File Buddy).
On Windows, you can change the file extension from .m4a to .m4b.

If you have done this and it still is not showing up nder audiobooks;
1 Make a copy of this file outside of iTunes.
2 Delete the file from iTunes.
3 Re-add the .m4b copy you made, to iTunes.

If I may Interject,
Starting with 4 tracks and after updateing from iTunes 6 I still have 4 tracks in my iTunes 7 Library all files end ".m4a" yet two are in the "Music" playlist and two are in the "Audiobooks" playlist (all are music). I have tried all the sugested solutions and yet they doggidly remain in their seperate playlists.
Hmmmm.

Thanks, Chris, for your suggestions. I tried all of the instructions (converted the MP3 files to AAC, copied them to the finder, deleted originals within itunes, renamed them from .m4a to .m4b, reimported into iTunes) but they still appear only in the MUSIC library.

I visited the weblink you suggested too. It also says this should have worked, but alas, it didn't. Perhaps it's an issue related to iTunes 7.

I compared the two files (the correctly-identified true audiobook "Siddhartha" & the troublemaker ripped audiobook "America the Book"). Siddhartha is a protected AAC file (.m4b) encoded at 32kbps, sample rate 32kHz. America is a nonprotected AAC audio file (.m4b) encoded at 64kbps, sample rate 22.050kHz.

Any ideas why these techniques aren't working?

All my audiobooks are .m4b files and identified as protected AAC audio files although I ripped them from CDs (AAC codec). It's done by renaming the file and changing the file type to "M4B". First I used Doug Adam's "make bookmarkable" script, but found it was not sufficient to get audiobooks into the right category on my iPod as it only changed the file type and not its name. So I changed it to rename the file as well.

Feel free to download the modified script at http://www.arndt-family.com/AAC2Audiobook.zip

P.S:: Following Scott's link I just learned that Doug's script changes the file name as well, now. It didn't rename when I downloaded I approx. 1 1/2 year ago...

Thanks, Matthias. The newest version of Doug Adams' "Make Bookmarkable" does indeed change the file extension to .m4b as you mentioned. However, the script does not make the audiobook appear in the correct LIBRARY (for me, anyway) as it is billed to do.

According to the FAQ on the AldoBlog, some files simply REFUSE to be correctly recognized as audiobooks despite all these machinations. I think I'm ready to give up. 🙂

Don't do it 🙂

Maybe give it one (last?) try: Make all audiobooks "bookmarkable" (extension .m4b, file type M4B), e. g. using Doug's script. Drag the books out of iTunes to the desktop (aka copy them). Delete the entries (and corresponding files) in iTunes. Restart iTunes and reimport the backups.

Still not in the right category? Okay, give up ... 🙂

Chris,

Extensions are a Windows thingy.

Sorry, you're dead wrong: creators/types are a Mac thingy and has got a (poor) alternative with file name extentions, which are taken into consideration by Mac OS X as welll ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creator_code). Most other OS use file name extensions to map corresponding applications.

On the Mac, the file extension is (mostly) irrelevant.

Sometimes, but not always: On a filesystem or network protocol not supporting Mac OS' metadata there nothing left except file name extensions.

I tried out synching M4B files to my iPod mini and they never shew up as audiobooks before I renamed them with the extension ".m4b" ... Did you try it as well?

Bye, Matthias

"Extensions are a Windows thingy.
Sorry, you're dead wrong"

Actually, I was very correct. Extension ARE for Windows (or are you suggesting they are not for Windows?)
Try to delete the extension off a Windows file and it will even warn you about doing this.

I meant extensions are not (much) of a Mac thing.

Since iTunes is only for Windows or Mac and 99.9% of the users here are only here for Windows or Mac, that was my frame of reference.
