ApplicationsHi,
This Menu
Then This item in this Panel.
Click the line indicated twice to reveal the Serial Number
The Battery may have it's own Serial Number.
The Serial Number may not show if the Logic/Mother board has been replaced during a repair or refurbishment. The space after Serial Number will be Blank or may show just the # symbol.
I have seen one post where someone claimed that installing Mavericks had lost them their Serial Number on a Mac that was working in the iMessages account after OS X 10.8.2 but before OS X10.9 (they also claimed Apple were aware of this issue).
If it is missing then you must visit an Apple Store (Or Apple Authorised Service Provider) to have it re-added to the logic board..

Jun 21, 2014 11:33 AM in response to visnuhby Ralph Johns (UK),Hi,
There is only one solution to getting that particular iMessages error message.
You must contact Apple.
I tend to use this route https://appleid.apple.com/
Use the Manage option to Sign in.
Then the Contact Us in the Menu followed by the iTunes Contact Us in the page that follows.
After that generally follow the Manage Account options until you are offered an email.
Send them the details.
As far as I can guess-ti-mate the account/ID has somehow got flagged in such a way that only an Apple Support person can sort.

ApplicationsHi gellendros,
If it will not work in any Account (Mac User) and the Serial Number is Present (I am not sure yours is) then you will need to reinstall the OS (And Apps that come with it).
To be clear a re-install will not solve the issue if the Serial Number is Missing.

Jun 21, 2014 12:02 PM in response to Ralph Johns (UK)by gellendros,I found a serial number on the bottom of the battery compartment. The # is 607-2831-C is the first line. Second line is 88.11.2B Third line is 203A081250.
Like I had said in the last message, I have talked with the previous owner and iMessage worked up to when he reset it to factory setting right before he sent it to me.

ApplicationsHi,
That sounds like the Hardware UUID number spread out over three lines
The Picture above was grabbed from System Information (Use the Apple Menu whilst holding down the ALT (Option) Key)
I have edited the Serial Number and the UUID number.
You can check it here https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
