kernel_task is sending massive amounts of data

I just checked my activity monitor because the fan of my MacBook was constantly running at high speeds when I discovered that the kernel_task was sending out data. Can anyone explain this?

Currently it has sent 32.84 GB and is still sending at 1MB/s, which is my upstream bandwidth, and received 4.96GB.

Could this be TimeMachine? The message in the status bar said 'prepairing backup'.

Have I got a Trojan inside me sending stuff to the world? :-(

This was exactly my thought, too. I had some strange network activity earlier and had the compressed memory of Safari open tabs too high. There is no sign of documented malware. I also use the Time Capsule, and it hasn't been working properly, for no apparent reason, with too much space taken up, as long as this issue has been with me. It does not persist when Time Machine is turned off.

Me three, thought surely I'd been hacked and a rouge process had hidden itself and was mining cryptocurrency, melting my processor and hogging bandwidth. I even had a dream about it, the malware was so bad that I couldn't even do anything once my computer was booted, just screens of trash! Apple giving me nightmares...

Back to reality, I just disabled iCloud, will see if kernel_task behaves itself now.

Why is nobody trying to fix this?? I have had this problem for over a year. I am convinced it is related to iCloud drive and this is bulls***!

I have contacted Apple multiple times and they just give you the run around.

iCloud drive doesn't work properly, hangs while trying to download/upload something and consumes all of your data.

Hundreds of GB's in one month? This needs to be fixed as a priority and personally I want all the money back that I've paid for iCloud drive as its faulty.

Tried turning it off and it stops, turn it back on and it starts again.... Apple's resolution to me: You can just turn it off.... Well no sh** Apple, I could also turn my computer off but that doesn't fix the issue.

In fact it eventually stopped. Time Machine backed up around 60GB. (I hadn't really made any changes to my system or added that much content.)

But the next day it started again. This time kernel_task downloaded 1GB and uploaded around 500MB while 'prepairing the backup'. It then backed up another 220MB.

It looks like the data is staying within the local network. My router didn't reflect that network activity in its internet graph.

So it looks like TimeMachine is the cause for the activity. I'm using a QNAP NAS as backup device. Maybe that software is acting up.

I am experiencing a similar problem. I am downloading a large file (over 1 GB) and it's taking forever (given my nominal connection speed). Activity monitor shows that kernel_task is sending out way more data on the network than I am receiving. What is it sending, and where is it sending it? I don't have any other evidently network intensive applications running. Time Machine is not active, and kernel_task is only taking 3-4 % of cpu. Have I got a Trojan inside me sending stuff to the world? :-(

I am running Yosemite 10.10.1 and am connected to the internet via WiFi using Time Capsule as my router.

Anyone have ideas?
