Q: completer.app- what is this?

I keep getting a pop up for completer.app, but do not see it in my application folders. What is this and how do I get rid of it so it doesn't keep popping up?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), facetime not working

Is there a version of AdwareMedic available for Snow Leopard - tried the download but it is for 10.7+ ??

Unfortunately, no. If you have Snow Leopard, you'll need to use the manual removal instructions instead.

No. There is the older Adware Removal Tool. Look for "Download now (TSMART.zip)". This is from the same author and, but it hasn't been maintained and doesn't clean up all the latest Adware versions.

Do you think I maybe have not already seen your ad?

As has already been explained to you, it's not my ad. I'm a very satisfied user of this software and stand by every word I said about it. If you have already tried it and are still having the issue, I'd very much like to know that.

Thank you.  I looked for genieno everywhere, even searched plist and nothing showed up.  Installed Adware Medic, and of course it found it.  I deleted all files and rescanned after restart and it says it's not there.  Don't know where it came from.  Checked my safari preferences and my home page was correct.  Thank you for your help.  By the way, I had to find this conversation via a google search and not apple communities.  I've had to do that several times.  Apple needs to do a better job for their customers.

Apple can't control where its customers surf to and download.  Users have to take responsibility to learn about safe surfing, etc., and how to protect themselves.

I wasn't referring to the adware on my computer - I was referring to the fact that I had to find this thread through a google search instead of the search I did on Apple Support Communities.  This is the second time the "google" search brought me to what I needed in the Apple Communities when my search here was unsuccessful.

The search function has been badly broken (very badly) on these forums since the last Jive upgrade. It can indeed by extremely difficult at times to find things within the forum itself, that is easily found and linked to from the outside.

Same problem for me - started happening from about 30th Dec 14. Ran AdwareMedic http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php as some here have suggested and it seemed to work. It flagged about 5 problem files which I would never have found myself! Really easy to use. I’m using OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1 on a iMac (2009).

Thank you!! Just downloaded and used this software to remove the adware. Worked like a gem. Donated a little amount as well.

found best answer and easy to follow instructions that seemed to have worked to address this problem at http://www.macissues.com/2014/04/23/how-to-detect-and-remove-genieo-for-mac/

Ran the removal script yesterday on OS 10.6.8 and it stopped the problem.

ClamXav worked for me, and it's totally pain free.

I looked for any files from the first list in the post by cbranstrom on 14 July above and none were on my computer running OS 10.6.8. Then I downloaded and ran ClamXav and it found nothing. So I Cleared my Cache for Safari and  Browsing Data for Chrome hoping that it will stop the annoying Completer.app pop-up asking for my admin password. Does that make sense? If that doesn't work I will look at the genieo.completer trojan thread.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. It's a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits.

Also download and run Find Any File to search for a file with Name contains  "genieo" in the file name.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

Not really. If you are getting a valid dialog box asking for your admin password it would have to be coming from OS X when the Completer.app asks for admin permissions, so nothing in a browser cache should have anything to do with that.

The second link in andyBall_uk's solution Adware Removal Guide : Genieo has been updated to include the latest versions of Genieo and should take care of your problem. Otherwise use AdwareMedic from the same author and this forum's recognized Malware/Adware guru to identify anything else you might have.
