What do I need to be careful about when buying a used iPhone?

I understand that when one obtains a used iPhone that it cannot be activated if the previous owner has not performed certains steps to make sure the phone will be able to accept another persons SIM card, etc. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Richard

The person who sold it needs to have performed all the steps described in this article, and in particular, needs to have removed the device's activation lock(if it was ever set).

Know who you are buying it from and that they are the legitimate owner of the phone. Have them wipe the phone in front of you. Know how to contact them if you have any questions. I would rather buy from an authorized Apple source then trust a used phone. As I said, be very carefull if you buy a used phone.
