Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Looks like you are not able to use the main window in iMovie. One thing you can do to try and bring the window back is to restore the window layout.
iMovie (2013): Change the “iMovie” window layout
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14742
Restore the default window layout
Choose Window > Revert to Original Layout.
Have a nice day,
Mario

Jul 2, 2014 5:06 AM in response to mario49by Carlingfl,Hey Mario.
When I open iMovie 11 from the dock nothing happens. It just bounces but does nothing else. When I try to open it in Finder, the grey bar comes up but the 1712 message appears again and when I try to hover over the grey bar, the spinning multicoloured wheel comes out.
Thanks for trying to help!

Taken from my notes of standard answers:
Error -1712 errAETimeout Apple event timed out
Can be so many things. I would
Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk as iDVD, DVD-player, Mac OS etc. needs this to work OK.
Then I would close down my Mac (no Mains for about 20 minutes) - then re-start it and see if the Error re-appear when clicking on the Movie.dmg/.img file (to get it to mount as an imaginary DVD disk)
If no error - then try playing it with Apple DVD-player tool.
Yours Bengt W
